What a fantastic past couple of weeks it has been for our eight AUT Communication Studies students Sophie Albornett, Sylvia Mokuoane, Teofilo James Garcia Hannah, Joel Bennett , Katie Dahl, Isla Richardson, Suzie Kim, and Olivia Cowie currently on the study tour in Malaysia.

Their journey so far has seen a three week stay at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam - with a bonus trip to World Heritage City Malacca and a visit through the UiTM Rembau campus.

The group participated in several insightful field trips during their stay, including meeting with PETRONAS at the iconic Twin Towers. Students saw first-hand the corporate application of crisis management strategies in a high-stake environment.

Adding to their experience, the students met with representatives from Malaysia's Ministry of Communication and Bernama TV to discuss global communication trends, technology, and the implication of artificial intelligence in the communication field.

The students thoroughly enjoyed joining classes, engaging in campus life, and meeting Malaysian peers and staff. One of the students, Teofilo, was even interviewed by Bernama Radio about their study tour and campus experience.

Thanks to everyone at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) for being such wonderful hosts and making this trip so engaging and valuable. Special thanks to Dr. Wan Norbani Wan Noordin for making it possible.

This tour is not only an academic milestone but also a unique opportunity to foster cross-cultural learning and build relationships. Keep your eyes peeled for what is to come on the tour next!

With 14 community newspapers due to close, too many parts of NZ are becoming ‘news deserts’ - Senior Lecturer Greg Treadwell.

Once a key source of information and a training ground for young journalists, community newspapers are now an endangered species. It’s bad news for the news industry – but even worse for the public.

Much has been happening for the eight AUT Communication Studies students currently on the study tour of Malaysia!

Not only have they attended the signing of an MoU with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), but they have also been in the classroom, engaged in screen production practices, and immersed themselves in culture, all as part of the overseas education experience.

You can read more about the signing of the MoU here: https://www.buletintv3.my/nasional/uitm-aut-pertingkat-kolaborasi-pendidikan-dan-penyelidikan/

And make sure to keep checking in to see more of what the study tour has on offer 🙂
