A thought-provoking evening at the University of Canterbury Faculty of Law with Justice Susan Glazebrook, Judge in Residence and Hotung Visiting Fellow.

In her public lecture, When Justice Fails, Justice Glazebrook explored the devastating consequences of miscarriages of justice, highlighting the profound impact on both those wrongly accused and the victims of crime. An engaging and insightful discussion on the human cost of justice gone wrong and the importance of a fair and effective legal system.

🌿 Welcome, Molly! 🌿

We're excited to have Molly join the Blue Carbon Futures Programme at UC for her master's capstone project, supervised by Dr Elizabeth Macpherson.

Her research explores how legal and policy frameworks can better support large-scale coastal wetland restoration in Aotearoa, with a focus on Te Waihora and Muriwai o Whata. Combining her background in climate policy advocacy with a passion for coastal ecosystems, Molly is helping identify ways to accelerate restoration efforts that benefit both people and the environment.

We were delighted to welcome Pulotu Tupe Solomon-Tanoa'I, Chief Philanthropic Officer of the Michael and Suzanne Borrin Foundation, to the UC Faculty of Law.

It was wonderful to have the opportunity to share conversations with Pulotu and learn more about the Foundation's important work supporting legal research and access to justice in Aotearoa New Zealand. Academic staff enjoyed a lively discussion, followed by a delicious morning tea.

A big thank you to Pulotu for taking the time to visit us. We greatly appreciated the opportunity to connect and exchange ideas.

👏 Congratulations to Dr Isa Alade and Professor Annick Masselot on being awarded Michael and Suzanne Borrin Foundation Travel and Learning Awards.

Dr Alade will travel to Papua New Guinea to attend the 2026 Alliance for Financial Inclusion Global Policy Forum, while Professor Masselot will visit Monash University’s CEVAW to research legal responses to violence against women during and after disasters.

A fantastic achievement and well-deserved recognition of their important work. 🎉🌏📖

We had a fantastic session in LAWS303 Advanced Employment Law this week. A huge thank‑you to Dr Sorcha MacLeod from the University of Copenhagen, who joined us to talk about the recruitment and employment of mercenaries.

Our students were absolutely captivated. It’s not every day you get to dive into such a complex and timely topic with a leading expert. We’re so grateful for her insights and the lively discussion that followed.

So proud of Chunyu Han (Amy) for passing her PhD oral examination on 19 June. Her research on employment law and domestic violence in New Zealand is so important. Big congratulations to Amy and to her supervisors, Annick Masselot, Cassandra Mudgway and Ruth Ballantyne.

UC Law Professor Annick Masselot was delighted to attend the Anderson Lloyd Prizes ceremony celebrating outstanding achievement in Contract Law and Land Law. Congratulations to Emma McCusker, awarded best student in Contract Law, and Hannah Selby, awarded best student in Land Law. A fabulous achievement by both students, well deserved.
