The LEAD Institute at UC Law has been delighted to host visiting researcher Theresia Hebestreit from Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Germany) at the University of Canterbury.

Theresia is currently undertaking PhD research on the important topic of “Conflicting legal competences for the warning of the population in times of crisis.” Her work explores the intersection of constitutional law, telecommunications law, and disaster control law, examining how overlapping federal and state powers in Germany can create legal uncertainty and inefficiencies in emergency warning systems.

Her research seeks to identify more coordinated legal and technical approaches to public warnings during disasters and emergencies.

New Zealand provides a particularly valuable perspective for this comparative study. With our unique hazard landscape and extensive experience in disaster response and public warning systems, New Zealand offers important insights into how governance structures shape emergency management outcomes.

Theresia is especially interested in comparing Germany’s federal system with New Zealand’s more centralised approach to understand how different legal and institutional frameworks affect disaster preparedness and response.

Reflecting on her time at UC, Theresia shared:

“What particularly appealed to me about UC, and especially the LEAD Institute, was the opportunity to work with a group of people for whom disaster law is not just a peripheral field but the core of their research, and who are therefore recognized experts in this area of the law.”

We have greatly enjoyed hosting Theresia and look forward to seeing the continued impact of her research in this critical and rapidly evolving field.

We are pleased to be hosting visiting scholar Dr Gindre from the Université de la Polynésie française at the UC Law School.
Her visit focuses on shared legal challenges across jurisdictions, including violence against women and disaster contexts, highlighting the importance of international collaboration between legal scholars from French Polynesia and Aotearoa
A valuable exchange that strengthens connections and future research.

What an amazing LSAANZ 2025 Conference! The UC Faculty of Law was thrilled to welcome so many generous, insightful, and inspiring scholars from across Aotearoa and around the world to share their perspectives on law and society.
We’re incredibly grateful for our ongoing partnership with Ngāi Tuāhūriri. Huge thanks to Prof. Elizabeth McPherson for her fantastic leadership in bringing the event together, and to Dr Marc Hanna, Claire Burgess, and Victoria Enriquez for all their hard work—along with the whole organising team (Marozane Spamers, Toni Collins, Cassandra Mudgway, John Hopkins, Natalie Baird, Annick Masselot and Sascha Muller) and to the many Postgraduate researchers who worked hard to make this conference a sucess.
A big shoutout to Marozane Spamers for hosting a brilliant ECR morning, with thought-provoking contributions from Erin Matariki Carr, Jan Hania, and Marc Trabsky on methodology and ethics; and from Cristy Clark, Rachel Killean, Nicole Graham, and Julia Dehm on research impact.
Our first keynote panel—Professor Anne Poelina and Gerard Albert, beautifully chaired by Dr Erin O'Donnell—opened up powerful kōrero on relationality and reciprocity. The second keynote panel, chaired by Dr Cristy Clark and featuring Professor Keakaokawai Varner Hemi, Dr Sereana Naepi, and Dr Julia Dehm, offered a deep and inspiring discussion about rights, resilience, and transforming our universities to better reflect and support our diverse communities.
What an incredible way to close out the year. Feeling energised, grateful, and inspired for what’s ahead! 🌿✨

UC Law was honoured to host the Indigenous Judges Tour in Christchurch! 🌿⚖️

We were privileged to welcome three remarkable jurists — Justice Michelle O’Bonsawin (Supreme Court of Canada), Justice Johanna Price (King’s Bench of Alberta), and Judge Peggy Bird (former Chief Judge, Pueblo of Pojoaque Tribal Court).

They shared powerful stories about their journeys to the bench and unique insights into Indigenous approaches to justice with our law students, academics, and members of the local legal community.

An inspiring and thought-provoking event for everyone who attended! 💬✨

What a fantastic evening at Duncan Cotterill for the University of Canterbury Faculty of Law’s lecture with Professor Lusina Ho, Distinguished Visiting Borrin Fellow! 🌟

Professor Ho captivated the audience with her talk on China’s journey with trust law, from its bold 2001 introduction to its evolving role in shaping the country’s economic cycles and private wealth management. Her insights into the challenges of adapting trust law for family succession planning were both sharp and thought-provoking.

A huge thank you to Duncan Cotterill for hosting this engaging event, and to the Michael and Suzanne Borrin Foundation for supporting Professor Ho’s visit through the Distinguished Visiting Borrin Fellowship.

What a night! 🌺✨ The Pacific Law Talanoa at UC Faculty of Law was an unforgettable celebration of our amazing Pacific law community! 💙⚖️

Huge shoutout to the Pacific Law Student Association (led by Anshal Prasad 🙌), our alumna Tiffany Sauni, and everyone who made this night possible! 🌟

Our alumni panel—Miranda Gray, Curtis Fatiaki, Berith Petaia, and Caroline Setefano—shared their journeys and inspired us all 💭🔥, with support from Dylan Asafo and Justice Sharkey.

We were so lucky to hear from Professor Leilani Tuala Warren 👩‍⚖️, Dean of Waikato Law School and Judge of the Samoan Supreme Court, who gave an incredible keynote on Samoa’s 2021 constitutional crisis.

Then… dinner time! 🍽️🎶 KP 105 was transformed into a dining hall with entertainment from the Nesian Club 🎤💃, and the Chief Justice of the NZ Supreme Court joined students for some great conversations over dinner. 🥳

An epic night of inspiration, connection, and celebration! 🌊🌴

We’re so excited to share that the University of Canterbury has just held its first-ever Wāhine Moot 🎉 A brand-new competition designed to encourage more wāhine to get involved in mooting and to build a strong community of future advocates.

This year’s moot problem explored a hugely important and timely topic: freedom of expression and hate speech on social media. The response was amazing — over 40 students signed up within days!

A massive thank you to UCSA, Kate Sheppard Chambers, local law firms, and our incredible judges for making this inaugural event such a success. And a special shout-out to Tegan Porteous, Alexandra Crampton, and Bethany Dawson for their leadership in creating and organising the UC Wāhine Moot 💐

🚨 New on The Conversation: Contractor or Employee? How a Proposed Law Change Will Favor Uber Over Its Drivers

Professor Annick Masselot explores with Amanda Reilly (UoV) and Lynne Coker (ARA) how the upcoming Employment Relations Amendment Bill might do the opposite of what it promises. Instead of protecting vulnerable workers, the proposed changes may make it even easier for platforms like Uber to misclassify drivers. The bill overlooks the real challenges faced by gig contractors, doesn’t fix the deeper issues in platform-based work, and ignores the labour law progress happening internationally.
