On Monday, we came together at Tūranga Library to celebrate the graduation of our incredible teaching graduates. 🎓

A huge congratulations to our S57, S58, P57 and P58 intakes, along with a special few from P59 who completed their studies early! 🔷🔶

Be proud of everything you have achieved and your fluency in the craft of teaching.

We can’t wait to see the impact you make in classrooms and communities across Ōtautahi and beyond.

Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro, nōna te ngahere, ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga, nōna te ao.

The bird that eats the miro berry, theirs is the forest; the bird that feasts on knowledge, theirs is the world.

Don’t get caught without your deliberate acts of management, or your class might end up looking a little like this rowdy example! 👀

At Grad School, we teach you 12 deliberate acts of management to help bring your class ‘below the line’ into the ~optimal environment for learning~ so your lessons don't end up looking quite like this one.

(No secondary interns were harmed in the making of this skit)

We’re glad to see our third term interns are picking up on some classic Grad School rules 📝

Have you got any others in mind that might be missing?

We were delighted to catch up with P34 alum Mike Crawford and hear about the impact he has been making at Te Kura Tuatahi o Pakiaka Woodend School.

Since graduating, Mike has grown into a Team Leader for Years 4 & 5, leading digital practice across the school and inspiring ākonga through his passion for literacy, mathematics, and STEM. From Cantamath successes to award-winning LEGO League teams, his story is a wonderful reminder of the difference dedicated teachers make every day.

We'd love to share more stories like Mike's from our primary alumni.

If you'd like to be featured, we'd love to hear from you 🟦 🟧

And if you're looking to reconnect with fellow graduates, join our new NZGSE Alumni Facebook Group and stay connected with our teaching community.

After eight wonderful years at NZGSE, we farewell our much loved colleague Helena McAlister, as she steps into a senior management role at Koromiko Mākoha, a new Year 1-8 school opening in Prebbleton in 2027.

Helena's journey with NZGSE began as an intern before she went on to teach in schools, eventually returning to NZGSE as an exceptional mentor, tutor, and Kaihautū.

Over the years, Helena has shaped the journeys of countless interns through her wisdom, support, high expectations, and generous spirit. Her sharp intellect and unwavering commitment to great teaching have left a lasting mark on our community, and she will be deeply missed.

We send her off with immense gratitude and excitement for this next chapter. We know Koromiko Mākoha will be incredibly fortunate to have her, and we can't wait to see the difference she'll continue to make.

Ngā mihi nui, Helena, and thank you for everything. 💙

Portfolio submissions as far as the eye can see! A big congratulations to our primary and secondary interns for the incredible amount of mahi they’ve produced this term, and a special thought for our tutors who are working through the marking process.

Ngā mihi o te tau hou 🌠

As we celebrate Matariki, NZGSE wishes our community and extended whānau a joyful and meaningful new year.

Matariki is a time to remember those who have come before us, celebrate the present, and look ahead to the future with hope.

To our interns who are now enjoying a well deserved break, take this opportunity to reflect on everything you've achieved so far, celebrate how far you've come, and look forward with excitement to the rest of your teaching journey.

Practice to employment ✨

For NZGSE alumna Sammy McDonnell, teaching practice was an opportunity to build relationships, gain confidence in the classroom and show schools what she could bring as a future kaiako.

After completing placements across four Christchurch schools, Sammy secured her first teaching role at Burnside High School before graduating, and has since continued her journey as a music and maths kaiako at Nelson College for Girls. 🎼

Read her story and discover how the time spent in classrooms with NZGSE's can open the door to your teaching career.
