Have you ever wondered how much Ōtautahi Christchurch has changed over time? 🌿📸

Along the Ōtākaro Avon River corridor, the Ōtākaro Living Laboratory team, led by UC Emeritus Professor Eric Pawson, is capturing these changes through “rephotography” - taking photos from the same spot years apart to show how our environment has evolved.

It's just one example of the incredible work local communities are doing to understand, protect and restore our environment. 💚

2026 UC Sustainability Research Award winner, Dr Carolynne Hultquist, is exploring how we can preserve the valuable environmental knowledge these groups have collected, sometimes over decades, so it can continue to benefit future generations.
Because the work of passionate locals today could help shape a more resilient Christchurch tomorrow.

Do you think you can spot all nine?

Nine Mischievous Muses have landed at the Teece Museum in LEGO form, but they’ve gotten themselves all mixed up.

Each Greek Muse traditionally represents a different artistic or scientific discipline, such as music, astronomy or poetry.

Take the kids to UC’s Teece Museum of Classical Antiquities at The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora these school holidays and see if you can find all nine Muses hiding around the gallery, then match each one to her creative or scientific domain.

What happens when you give a Mechanical Engineering student five weeks, a few 3D printers and a wearable art brief? 👀

Fourth-year UC student Fergus McMullan created Rise and Fall, a kinetic sculpture powered by gears and a lever-driven mechanism and took it all the way to the 2026 World of WearableArt finals.

The build involved CAD, 3D printing, prototypes, plenty of moving parts… and at one point, three or four printers running at once while the project took over his flat.

The result? A piece now being performed on the WOW stage alongside designs from around the world.

Pretty fashionable for an engineering project.

We’re celebrating some seriously talented illustrators at UC 🎨📚

Students from our first Master of Illustration cohort are heading to Auckland for the national Storylines Hui, where they’ll share their work with leading children’s book publishers, writers and illustrators from across Aotearoa.

It’s a brilliant opportunity for our students to make industry connections, build confidence and take another step towards careers in illustration.

The programme is led by award-winning illustrator Hilary Jean Tapper and gives students space to develop their own creative voice while learning from people working in the industry.

Featured here are illustrations by Kaye Julian, Stuart Reynolds and Emma Wilson — three of the students helping shape this exciting new chapter for illustration at UC.

We’re proud to see their work heading beyond the studio and out into the wider creative community. 💛

There’s nothing quite like experiencing a place for yourself. 🌏💛

Last week, we welcomed 20 international education agents from across Asia to NZ for our 2026 International Agent Famil – giving them the chance to experience UC, our people, our campuses, and a glimpse of life in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Across the week they met UC students and staff, explored our programmes and support, visited some of the spaces where teaching and research happen, and got a feel for what it’s really like to be part of the UC community.

And, of course, we had to show off Christchurch too. 🌿 They explored the city by tram, took to the Ōtākaro Avon River by Waka and experienced some of the places and experiences that make studying here so special.

The timing wasn’t bad either – our famous cherry blossoms were well and truly putting on a show. 🌸

A few moments from Run72 so far 💙 There have been a lot of laps, plenty of tired legs and even more people showing up for each other.
It’s been special seeing students, staff, friends and the wider Christchurch community get behind Run72 and Lads Without Labels, all while helping start conversations about men’s mental health.

And there’s still one more day to go. If you’re around campus tomorrow, come down, say hi, cheer someone on or join in for a lap.
