Passing through Rātā yesterday, you may well have wondered what the buzz was about. Our UC Electrical and Computer Engineering Department's annual Wacky Racers event once again drew a big crowd of participants and spectators alike. The event brings out the competitive spirits in our 4th year embedded systems students as they navigate their uniquely designed and built model cars through an obstacle course controlling their racers with their heads 🧙🧛‍♂️👩‍🚀👩‍✈️👨‍🏭💂‍♂️👷‍♀️

Congratulations to everyone who joined in the fun!

Forestry graduates stepping into strong careers 🌲

For Phoebe Naske and Kelvin Milne, studying Forestry Science at the University of Canterbury led directly into employment, thanks to hands-on learning and strong industry connections.

Both attended today's Autumn Graduation celebration, having already started roles in Australia, applying the practical skills gained through Te Kura Ngahere | School of Forestry.

Congratulations to you bolth 🎓💐

Last night we welcomed our largest ever group of first year engineering students at University of Canterbury to Pre-Union!

From bingo and co****le to giant jenga (and a LOT of pizza 🍕), it was the perfect way to kick off the year and start building new friendships.

Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering whānau!

✨ WiE CAN 2026 Wrap Up ✨

From 11–15 January, we welcomed 60 Year 13 female students from across Aotearoa to WiE CAN 2026, a week exploring engineering through hands-on challenges, real world problem solving, and building confidence for the future.

Students explored a wide range of engineering disciplines, connected with industry, and formed friendships that will last well beyond the camp.

A huge thank you to our 10 incredible Residential Assistants for their leadership, care, and support throughout the week, and to Tait Communications, whose generous support makes WiE CAN possible and helps grow the future of women in engineering.

We can’t wait to see what this cohort achieves and hope to welcome many of them back as engineering students in 2027.
