A slow-moving low is about to park itself over the South Island, and it's bringing serious weather from Wednesday. 🌧️❄️

🚗 SH8 & SH80 through the Mackenzie could see 30cm+ of snow. SH73 up to 20cm above 700m
⚡ Power outages possible. Livestock at risk in the cold.

If you're travelling south or west this week — check the road conditions before you leave. NZTA may close highways to stop vehicles getting trapped.

🚨 BREAKING: Social media could be off-limits for under-16s in New Zealand.

The Government has introduced a bill that would force platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube to properly verify that users are over 16 — no more just typing in a fake birthday. Companies that don't comply could be fined up to 10% of their global revenue.

The PM says one in three Kiwi kids aged 13–17 are already spending five or more hours a day on these apps, and it's hitting their sleep, schoolwork and mental health.

But here's the twist 👇 both coalition partners, ACT and NZ First, are voting AGAINST it. That means nothing happens until after the November election — and Labour's support would be needed to get it over the line.

Is your trampoline tied down? 🌬️

MetService has orange warnings up across the South Island and lower North Island this weekend. Severe gales gusting to 120km/h are forecast for Sunday through Wairarapa, Wellington, the Marlborough Sounds, Canterbury High Country, Southland and Stewart Island. An 18-hour heavy rain warning covers the Buller and Grey ranges, with thunderstorms possible Sunday morning, and snow is expected on higher South Island roads — NZTA has already flagged SH94, the Milford Road.

Damage to trees, powerlines and unsecured structures is possible, and driving will be tricky for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles. Rivers can rise fast, so never drive through floodwater when you can't see the bottom.

But it's not bad news everywhere. MetService says the North Island is "probably the best spot to be over the weekend", with 20C and above in the north — a proper taste of spring while the south copes with the tail end of winter.

Your kids' qualification is being replaced — and the people who'll actually teach it say don't. 📚
A new NZCER national survey of 830 teachers across 126 schools has landed, and the numbers are hard to ignore. 71% say NCEA should be improved, not removed. 68% are worried the changes will narrow the pathways available to students at their school. And only 24% think the new Year 12 and Year 13 certificates are heading in the right direction — against 44% who say they're not.
Principals said almost exactly the same thing back in June. 70% of them wanted NCEA fixed rather than scrapped.
The Government's case isn't baseless. It argues NCEA lacks coherence, that students can stack unrelated credits, and that a qualification should clearly signal what a young person actually knows and can do. Ministers point to strong public support for structural change, especially at Level 1. The new New Zealand Certificate of Education starts rolling out from 2028, with 2027 set aside as a preparation year.
But there's a difference between proving a system has problems and proving it needs demolishing. One teacher in the survey put it plainly: why not just modify NCEA?

When was your last screening — and did anyone actually remind you? 📩

A review has found close to a million cervical screening notifications never reached the people they were meant for. More than 800,000 were never even triggered. Over 600,000 of those were missed because the system quietly classed people as "inactive" if they hadn't seen a health service in three years — exactly the people most likely to be overdue.

Health NZ says it reviewed 13,000 cases and found no sign of harm, and points to screening rates now sitting above 77% — the highest ever recorded.

Advocates aren't buying it. Dr Bev Lawton called the register "a fail" and says an apology is owed to the women left in the dark.

Here's what matters most today: don't wait for a letter. If you're 25 to 69 and have a cervix, you can book a test — or do a self-swab — through your GP or nurse. Tell your mum, your sister, your mates. 🇳🇿

If the roads out of your city closed tomorrow, how long could your household actually last? 🏚️

A new University of Auckland study has modelled a magnitude 7.5 rupture on the Wellington Fault — and found 82% of trips out of the region would be impossible in the first three days. Three months on, roughly half still wouldn't be possible. Lower Hutt takes the biggest hit, with State Highway 1, Hutt Road and other key routes gone.

Some will say this is worst-case modelling on a fault that may not move for centuries. Others point out the fault last ruptured 300 to 500 years ago — and that "unlikely" is not the same as "never."

Researchers aren't asking for panic. They're asking for planning: targeted investment in the corridors that matter, before the shaking starts.

Would you feel safer knowing the police ute could power an entire emergency site? ⚡

NZ Police has confirmed it's evaluating the BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid — and the reason isn't speed. It's the battery. The Shark 6 can act as a mobile generator, running lights, radios and rescue gear straight off the vehicle during floods, storms and search-and-rescue callouts where there's no power for kilometres.

Some Kiwis will ask a fair question: should frontline emergency vehicles depend on a battery at all when conditions are at their worst?

Others say that's exactly the point — when the grid fails, a vehicle that carries its own power is worth more than one that doesn't.

Should what you say online affect whether you can hold a gun licence? 🇳🇿

Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki says police have permanently revoked his fi****ms licence — confirmed on Friday, six weeks after his licence was temporarily suspended on 30 June and his fi****ms were seized. He says he's now banned from holding a firearm even under a licensed supervisor, and links the decision to his public criticism of India's PM during the recent visit.

Police won't discuss individual cases. But the Fi****ms Safety Authority says every suspension and revocation comes down to one legal test under section 24A of the Arms Act: is this person "fit and proper" to possess a firearm? Tamaki rejects any suggestion his comments were hate speech, and says he'll challenge the ruling. Faith and community leaders had earlier asked police to look into his remarks.

Have you been waiting years to bring your parents to Aotearoa? 🇳🇿
Big change announced this weekend — the Parent Resident Visa ballot is being replaced. From 5 October, 90% of Expressions of Interest will be picked in date order, so the years you've already waited finally count for something. Only 10% stays in the ballot. The last ballot draw runs Tuesday 11 August, and the first queue selection is 10 November. The cap stays at 2,500 places a year.
But not everyone's celebrating. ACT says the fix doesn't go far enough — "An even fairer solution would be to make the system 100% queue-based." (Scoop News) And with more than 7,700 EOIs in the pool representing over 11,000 people, the maths still means years of waiting for many families.
⚠️ Important: if your EOI expires BEFORE 5 October, you'll need to submit a new one. If it expires on or after that date, you're fine.

One seat. That's what the Government's majority now rests on — are you paying attention yet? 🗳️
The new Taxpayers' Union–Curia poll has National on 31% and Labour slumping 3.7 points to 27.8% — their worst since December 2024. But the real story is The Opportunity Party breaking 5% for the first time in a mainstream poll, landing on 6.1% and eight seats. Government bloc: 61. Opposition bloc: 59. Luxon can still form a government — just barely.
Critics point out that a single poll is not an election, with a ±3.1% margin of error and a lot of campaigning still to come. Chris Hipkins has previously argued the late November date shows a Prime Minister trying to "hold on as long as he can."
