The Arts House Trust Graduate Exhibition Scholarship 2026
𝟮𝟮 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 – 𝟭𝟳 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳

Lucy Hill employs clay and wool in 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 to explore the layered histories embedded within the whenua and architecture of the Pah Homestead. Clay references the surrounding land and its pre-colonial histories, while wool reflects on livestock’s role in reshaping the landscape and the colonial impulse to impose order upon both society and nature.

Through subtle interventions integrated into the Homestead’s evolving architectural features, Hill invites visitors to engage in a slow, attentive encounter with often overlooked details. Activated through walking, the work fosters relationships between visitor, building, and whenua, revealing the enduring traces of history held within these interconnected spaces.

This exhibition is supported by The Arts House Trust and the Dunedin School of Art, Otago Polytechnic, Te Kura Matatini ki Otago. Lucy Hill is the 2026 recipient of The Arts House Trust & Dunedin School of Art Graduate Exhibition Scholarship.

Call for Papers Scope: Art & Design 32, 2027 - open theme.
We invite submissions for our next journal of the journal Scope (Art & Design). This arts journal aims to engage discussion on contemporary research in the visual arts and design. It is concerned with views and critical debates surrounding issues of practice, theory, history and their relationships as manifested through the visual and related arts and activities, such as sound, performance, curation, tactile and immersive environments, digital scapes and methodological considerations. With New Zealand and its Pacific neighbours as a backdrop, but not its only stage, Scope (Art & Design) seeks to address the matters which concern contemporary artists and arts enquirers in their environments of practice.

Square Peg in a Round Hole
A Reflection on My Recent Immersion in a PhD with Creative Practice by Publication

In this talk, artist and educator Fiona Jack will reflect on her time writing a PhD at The University of Westminster in London. Entitled “Gathering a Vocabulary Universe,” Fiona’s research draws threads between activism, community education, socially engaged art practice, art school pedagogies and social change. She will discuss the nature of her research while also reflecting on the journey of undertaking a PhD as an artist.

Fiona Jack is a New Zealand artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, where she is an Associate Professor at Elam Fine Arts, Waipapa Taumata Rau | University of Auckland. She completed a Master of Fine Arts at the California Institute of the Arts and has recently completed her PhD at the University of Westminster. She has exhibited throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. Her research and creative practice span public art, social and community-based practice, banner making, ceramics, posters and collaborative projects.
