We were fortunate to welcome Sámi academic and PhD student Laila Aleksandersen Nutti to our Tauranga campus this past week, hosted by Professor Mere Berryman.
Laila, from Sápmi - the Arctic region of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia - came to Aotearoa to participate in the WIPCE 2025 Conference and connect with Indigenous educators and communities. During her visit, she shared her research on Joik - a traditional Sámi form of song central to her PhD, and attended knowledge-sharing wānanga with our education team. One reflection from the wānanga was how Indigenous peoples around the world often have more in common than we realise.
He mihi nui, Laila - thank you for spending time with us at our Tauranga campus.

For Divyashna Sewak, the Master of Teaching and Learning at The University of Waikato offered the perfect balance between work and study.

“Being able to study full-time while working as a teacher aide meant I could apply what I was learning directly to my work with students,” she says.

Divyashna believes the programme’s structure, with all papers included, provided a comprehensive foundation for her teaching career, covering curriculum knowledge, literacy, numeracy, and culturally responsive practice.

Now a qualified teacher, she’s passionate about creating inclusive, supportive classrooms where every student feels empowered to succeed.

Meet Bekey, a recent graduate from our Master of Counselling programme now working as a clinician at Whiria Te Tāngata Wellstop - helping young people in our communities feel heard, supported, and valued.

Her journey began right here, surrounded by awhi, small classes, meaningful connections, and 330+ face-to-face counselling hours that built the foundation for the work she does today.

On Gumboot Friday, we’re celebrating the incredible counsellors making a real difference across New Zealand, and the supporters who help remove barriers so young people can get help when they need it most.
