Just a reminder - Our very own Professor Judy Bowen is speaking this evening, 5:45pm, on campus in the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts - "Being Human in the age of Technology."

Technology is embedded into every part of our lives, but what can we do to make certain that it is reliable, usable and safe?

The bar opens at 5pm, free parking available at Gate 2B. Click the link below to register.

Motivated by a need for “sovereign digital systems,” our very own Professor Te Taka Keegan, and master's student Kingsley Eng, set out to develop a high-fidelity synthetic voice—a text-to-speech system, in other words—for a specific dialect of te reo Māori.

What they produced may offer a replicable blueprint for other minority language communities around the world.

Three of our students, Alexis Manosca, Dana Greaves, and Saeedeh Shokoohi, recently enjoyed the opportunity to attend the IAASysters NZ Workshop and the New Zealand Network Operators Group (NZNOG) Conference in Christchurch, connecting with women and industry professionals from across Aotearoa’s tech sector. 🗣⚡

IAASysters NZ is an annual workshop that creates a welcoming and supportive space for women in tech, with a strong focus on confidence, soft skills, and career development. Alongside this, the NZNOG conference brought together network operators and organisations from across the country, offering valuable insight into the tech industry in action.👩🏼‍💻💡

Together, the two events offered a balance of reflection and real world perspective. From thought-provoking discussions on career mindset and growth, to conversations around networking, self-belief, and navigating the tech industry, the experience challenged perspectives and sparked new ideas.

Beyond the sessions themselves, the opportunity to connect with like-minded women, build new relationships, and be part of a wider tech community made the experience especially meaningful.
We’re proud to see our students stepping into these spaces — curious, confident, and ready to shape what comes next 💡

The University of Waikato and University of Canterbury have been shortlisted to lead a $70M national AI platform – Outdoor AI – aimed at transforming New Zealand’s primary industries. From farms and orchards to aquaculture, AI will help improve productivity, sustainability, and exports.

The project focuses on real-world solutions, developed alongside iwi partners like Ngāi Tahu and Waikato-Tainui, and shaped by the challenges faced by industry.

If successful, this initiative could make New Zealand a world leader in outdoor AI, opening doors for new technology ventures and smarter, data-driven decision-making in primary industries.

A shout out to all those involved in the 5th edition of "Data Mining - Practical Machine Learning Tools and Techniques" which has won a "Textbook Excellence Award" from the Textbook & Academic Authors Association. Well done everyone! 🏆🎉

A short description: Data Mining offers a thorough grounding in machine learning concepts, along with practical advice on applying these tools and techniques in real-world data mining situations. This highly anticipated new edition of the most acclaimed work on data mining and machine learning teaches readers everything they need to know to get going, from preparing inputs, interpreting outputs, evaluating results, to the algorithmic methods at the heart of successful data mining approaches.

Extensive updates reflect the technical changes and modernizations that have taken place in the field since the last edition, including more recent deep learning content on topics such as generative AI (GANs, VAEs, diffusion models), large language models (transformers, BERT and GPT models), and adversarial examples, as well as a comprehensive treatment of ethical and responsible artificial intelligence topics. Authors Ian H. Witten, Eibe Frank, Mark A. Hall, and Christopher J. Pal, along with new author James R. Foulds, include today’s techniques coupled with the methods at the leading edge of contemporary research.

This edition is dedicated to the memory of lead author Ian H. Witten - teacher and researcher extraordinaire.

Last week we ran our first Wall-E replica labs for COMPX335 and COMPX535! ✨

Students got hands-on with our somewhat temperamental Wall-e replicas, discovering the joys (and challenges!) of working with real hardware. Through these sessions students are exploring emerging technologies, learning what's possible and what's limited. Whether students move into social robotics, IoT, or wearables, this foundation prepares them for the real-world challenges of modern software engineering.
