📢 Big news for Finance at Waikato Management School! ⭐

Our Bachelor of Business in Finance has been officially recognised by the CFA Institute’s University Affiliation Program — this is the global benchmark of excellence for investment and financial analysis professionals. 📊💲🌏

The University of Waikato now joins a select group of New Zealand universities affiliated with the CFA Institute, further strengthening our reputation for industry-relevant finance education.

Dr Martin Bai, Senior Lecturer in Finance, says: “This recognition confirms that Waikato's finance students are equipped with the global best-practice knowledge, analytical skills, and rigorous professional standards needed to succeed in today's fast-evolving finance industry.”

“Our programme prepares students for rewarding careers in areas such as corporate banking, consulting, risk analysis, currency trading, stockbroking, and investment portfolio management," says Dr Bai.

It also gives Waikato graduates a strong pathway towards achieving the internationally recognised Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. This is the gold standard for investment and financial analysis professionals, trusted by employers worldwide. 🎓🏆

Even better, the partnership includes three CFA scholarships each year for Waikato students to cover their CFA exam fees, plus access to valuable industry resources and networking opportunities.

To gain this recognition, Waikato Management School successfully demonstrated that at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge is embedded within our Finance curriculum.

CFA affiliation also provides an academic bridge to some of the core finance papers in Waikato's new Bachelor of Banking, Finance and Technology (BBFinTech) degree.

This innovative programme combines traditional finance principles with an advanced understanding of cutting-edge technologies that are disrupting the finance industry, such as blockchain, data analytics, and digital payments.

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of our former colleague, Emeritus Professor Asad Mohsin, on Saturday, 7th March. 🌿🕊️

Before joining Waikato Management School as a senior lecturer of tourism and hospitality in 2003, Dr Mohsin had enjoyed an impressive international career in the hospitality industry; including working for the Sultan of Brunei and running one of Darwin’s top restaurants.

After completing his PhD at Charles Darwin University, he chose to follow his doctoral supervisor, Professor Chris Ryan, to the University of Waikato, where he built a distinguished academic career over two decades until his retirement in 2024.

Dr Mohsin mentored and inspired generations of students and colleagues. He established practical food and beverage training for our hospitality students at Wintec, supported an internship programme with Accor hotels, and strengthened links with industry partners such as Tourism Waikato and Tourism New Zealand. His research also helped to establish halal tourism as an emerging field of scholarship.

Beyond the University of Waikato, Dr Mohsin was a highly respected community leader. He served as President of the Waikato Muslim Association and the Waikato Multicultural Council from 2014 to 2023, and worked tirelessly to support newcomers and strengthen understanding between cultures and faiths. He also initiated the first Multicultural Day in Hamilton – an event that is now held annually.

Hamilton City Council Mayor Tim Macindoe says: “I will always remember his courageous and dignified leadership following the 2019 Christchurch mosque attack, and the compassion, wisdom and reassurance he offered, not only to our local Muslim community but to our entire city, at a time that was so traumatic for all New Zealanders."

In 2022 Dr Mohsin was appointed Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Community Engagement at the University of Waikato, reflecting his deep connections with the Muslim, Indian and refugee communities. That same year he received a Hamilton Civic Award for his outstanding voluntary service to the people of Hamilton.

In 2025, Dr Mohsin was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year Honours for his services to the Muslim community and to education.

His legacy will live on in the values of compassion and unity that he championed throughout his life. The University’s flag will fly at half-mast until Wednesday to mark his passing.
