Our Master of Business & Management (MBM) students presented their team pitches for creating a real, sustainable business to a panel of expert judges last month, as part of the MBM Dragons' Den Competition.

Congratulations to the winning team, Korimako, who went to great lengths to perfect all aspects of their business proposition. This included designing a prototype of the product, marketing, solid financials, a clear strategy, strong governance, and a focus on sustainability.

"The mission of our business idea, SWAP, was to reduce, reuse and recycle using a fun element," said one team member. "We clearly identified a problem, found a solution with a unique value proposition and presented it with precision. Equal investment and motivation from all members put us on the winning track."

The MBA Integrated Case Competition is an opportunity for our students to test their ability to analyse data, conduct research, develop a strategy and present to a panel of experts; all in the space of 24 hours.

A case study describing the current situation facing an organisation is presented to students on Friday morning, with the next 24 hours spent working as a group to offer a pathway forward to that organisation. The task facing students was to develop next steps for a capital-constrained Australian micro-distillery start-up.

Being forced to work under pressure and develop a strategy in this short period of time required a careful balance of creativity and practicality. Working in this environment forced students to draw on the broader toolset they have been exposed to in their academic journey and integrate these insights to formulate a sophisticated, yet achievable strategy.

At the conclusion of the 24 hours, students pitched to a panel of experts that included senior managers from the veterinary, electricity, information-communication technology and the public sector. Students presented a range of strategies that focused on leveraging the core values of the organisation and extending the current suite of available capabilities. The panel commented on the quality and ingenuity of the presentations and commended the professionalism of each group’s pitch, particularly given the compressed timeframe.

The winning team was unanimously touted as the best and put forward a proposal that included extending the product lineup to compete in a different market niche and forming a unique collaboration with a provider of gift hampers in the Australian market to consolidate their boutique position and drive brand awareness.
