After very little deliberation, and in our 2nd year of doing this, PHT have made a unanimous decision to spend the beginning of every summer with the Hetaraka Whanau in Matai Bay. I mean, can you blame us? Diving for Kina, Paua & Crays, Riding Horses, Views from every angle, the most hospitable whanau you'll ever meet, hands down.

Huge Mihi to Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Hoani Waititi, Te Kotuku and Nga Puna O Waiorea, for an Awesome performance last night. Pou Herenga Tangata travelled from Moerewa to Auckland to watch these Rangatahi perform the shows they had created and they went hundy. We even had some whanau on stage, which was a bonus!
The performance was held at The Kiri Te Kanawa theatre, and one of the people that spoke, talked about how important it was because it's creating the space for other young Maori to aspire to, and we're here for it!!

Kia ora whฤnau

We have just completed the 2nd wฤnanga of our Retracing the Footsteps of our Tupuna kaupapa - Hikoi ki Maunganui.

And it was as special and amazing as we ever dreamed it could be.

We started on Okoro o Pipiri at Karetu Marae and then on to Manea - Footsteps of Kupe experience. We loved it!! We loved the learning and the young people - proud descendents of Kupe - who took us on their journey. In our whare that night we were able to connect our whakapapa back to that place.

Next we learned more about Tohe and his epic journey to Maunganui. We looked at some of the stories of the 100+ places he named along his journey and shared some new learning (and many laughs) together.

The focus of our wฤnanga however was to reach the summit of Maunganui, where Tohe took one last look back toward his home and his people at Maunga Piko.

We had 20 in our roopu from 1 year old to 50+, 3 generations of whฤnau sharing this experience, looking after each other, learning together, and after what felt impossible at many points we made it. The views were both stunning and poignant. We remembered Tohe and his companion Ariki, the love Tohe had for his mokopuna Raninukura, and his wish to see her one last time. We were very proud to bring Ngฤti Manu back to this place.

A rain cloud off shore reminded us it was time to leave the maunga and it disappeared as we left the summit. We all looked after each other as we made our way down and were looked after by that that place.

Back at the marae our whฤnau had a delicious kai waiting for us. We were weary and some of us (just the adults) were very sore. We deeply appreciated the kai and the love and support.

We enjoyed korero and reflections in the whare until midnight. We reminded our young people about how special, significant and loved they all are.

It was a slow start this morning with more learning for our young people about taking care of our whare and again they were amazing.
