We enjoyed an informative and engaging session presented by Master of Nursing Science student, Anne Nacar at Country and Chat (The Philippines) on Wednesday, 13 May. The session started off with students and staff sampling some delicious Filipino treats prepared by Anne, including Pancit Bam-I, Chicken Adobo, Maja Blanca, Fishballs and Turon.

Anne’s presentation introduced her home country, the Philippines and incorporated some “did you know” facts. Anne highlighted the history of the country, the climate and seasons, cultural tapestry, flavors of the islands, natural wonders, festivities, biodiversity, and ecotourism. We also watched some videos about the different types of food and festivals.

This session ended with a trivia game and an interactive Q&A. Thank you to Anne for the delicious treats and interesting presentation and to everyone who attended this event.

Our new postgraduate students enjoyed perfect weather for their day trip around the Bay last Saturday!

With warm sunshine and blue skies, the group visited various Napier attractions including the Tom Parker Fountain, National Aquarium of NZ, Faraday Centre and Perfume Point. The day continued with lunch at West Quay before heading to Waiaroha - Heretaunga Water Discovery Centre in Hastings followed by Te Mata Peak, where they enjoyed the beautiful views. The day ended with ice-cream at Rush Munro’s.

We hope everyone enjoyed their trip around the Bay.

Last week we had the pleasure of hearing from guest speaker, Peter Gray during our first Lunch and Chat for Term 2. Peter is Branch Manager at ANZ Bank, Hastings and visited us to talk about Scams and Frauds in New Zealand.

This session highlighted the common frauds and scams, how to protect yourself and where to go for help. Peter discussed the various types of scams including cold calls, phishing texts, remote access scams, investment scams and those using AI tools.

He stressed that “if it doesn’t feel right, generally it’s not”. He also spoke on how to spot red flags indicating a scam and what you should do when you notice something is not right. If you feel that you have been scammed, he advised that you contact the bank to let them know as soon as possible.

Towards the end of the session, Peter spoke about how to protect yourself by never sharing your passwords, PINs, credit card information, login details or any other codes. Be wary of unexpected phone calls and do not give remote access to anyone. It is also important to have layers of authentication to protect yourself.

Many thanks to Peter for an insightful and interactive session and we thank everyone who attended.

As a new term starts, we would like to warmly welcome all our postgraduate students joining us at our EIT Hawke’s Bay campus. We are excited to have you study with us!

Last week, we held our orientation programme to introduce our new students to key staff and mentors as well as to help them feel at home at EIT and in Hawke’s Bay. It was great to see students from different countries and backgrounds enjoying their time connecting with other staff, mentors and with each other.

Orientation plays an important role in ensuring that students are settling into a new environment and community. It provides essential information about available support services, the academic environment and other resources.

We hope your study journey is filled with building connections, friendships, exploration, and experiences.
