🎉 Reflecting on an incredible three days at the NZ Chambers Annual Conference 2026! 🎉From outstanding speakers and cutting-edge AI technology to the warmth of Rotorua’s manaakitanga, this year’s conference was a fantastic showcase of the strength of the New Zealand Chambers network.

A huge thank you to the Rotorua Business Chamber team. Pulling off a conference of this scale is no small feat, and they delivered an exceptional event that was engaging, informative, and seamlessly run from start to finish.

A recurring theme throughout the conference was productivity, innovation, and AI. We heard thought-provoking insights from business, government, and industry leaders on the opportunities and challenges facing New Zealand businesses.

Some key takeaways included:
🤖 Embracing AI as a practical tool to improve productivity and member engagement
📈 The importance of lifting New Zealand’s productivity performance
🛡️ The growing need for cyber preparedness and effective communication during incidents
🌱 New opportunities to create impact through Business for Good initiatives
💼 Supporting business resilience and growth in an increasingly complex environment

The conference featured an impressive lineup of speakers, including Liam Dann, Andrew Fairgray, Steve Wilson, Jacky James, Masami Sato, Paul Ingram, Michael Collins, Kiri Hannifin, Dean Ford, Hon. Barbara Edmonds, Hon. Louise Upston, and Hon. Cameron Brewer.

But perhaps the biggest takeaway was not the technology or the presentations — it was the conversations, connections, and shared commitment to supporting New Zealand businesses.

That’s what the Chamber network does best.

🏛️ The Conversation Starts With You 🏛️

Big changes to local government are being discussed across New Zealand.

The Government is requiring councils to consider possible amalgamation into larger council structures. While no decisions have been made about the future of Manawatū District Council , these discussions could influence how our communities are represented, how decisions are made, and how local services are delivered for years to come.

This is an important opportunity for residents, businesses, and community groups to understand what is being considered and to share their views before any future direction is decided.

Public meetings are being held online and across the district, including Feilding, Pohangina, Kimbolton, and Rongotea.

📢 It’s important to be part of the conversation.

🏛️ Have your say on the future of local government in our region 🏛️

Should Palmerston North City Council merge with other councils?

The Government has given councils three months to consider options for potential local government reorganisation. While no decisions have been made, any future changes could have implications for rates, representation, community facilities and services, infrastructure investment, and Palmerston North’s identity and priorities.

If local councils do not develop their own proposals, Central Government may ultimately decide what changes happen in our region.

This is an important conversation for our community, and Palmerston North City Council is seeking feedback on what matters most to residents and businesses as discussions take place with neighbouring councils.

🚚🐄 Happy Moving Day – Rural Style! 🐄🚚

It’s that time of year again — when houses, stock, dogs, kids, gumboots, and entire lives seem to move across the countryside all at once.

For many in our rural community, 1 June marks Moving Day (Gypsy Day) and the beginning of a new dairy season.

To everyone shifting farms, starting fresh, unpacking boxes, chasing escaped calves, or trying to remember which trailer the kettle ended up in — we wish you all the very best for the season ahead.

Drive safely, be patient on the roads, and don’t forget to support the local cafés along the way ☕🐑

😊 Feel Good Friday 😊

As many of you know, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting a Massey Business School intern this semester — and last night he very kindly thanked us by cooking the most amazing meal.

On the menu was pork and egg, lettuce and sardines, and delicious chilli chicken — all beautifully prepared. We now know where the talent comes from, with his father being a chef!

Thank you so much, Zimu. It has been an absolute pleasure having you with us this semester. We’ve loved having you as part of the team and appreciate the enthusiasm, hard work, and positivity you brought with you.

Experiences like this are a wonderful reminder of the value internships and industry connections bring — not just professionally, but personally too.

💼 A big thank you to our members BDO for providing practical insights and analysis following the release of Budget 2026.

As expected, the Government’s focus remains on stability, debt reduction, and supporting economic growth, but there are several announcements that businesses will be watching closely.

Some of the business-friendly measures highlighted by BDO include:
✔ Reduced compliance requirements around fringe benefit tax logbooks
✔ Changes to Foreign Investment Fund rules aimed at helping retain talent
✔ Faster access to Research & Development tax credits
✔ Tax changes supporting charities and not-for-profits
✔ Investment in energy generation and business resilience
✔ Funding to double Trades Academy places to 20,000 students

Importantly, the Budget also provides businesses with greater clarity around the economic direction for the years ahead.

BDO’s commentary team, led by Tax Partner Alan Scott, attended the Budget media lock-up in Wellington and have prepared a timely overview of what these announcements may mean for businesses.

🏨 Palmy is Buzzing This Weekend! 🏨

We are reliably told there isn’t a single bed left in the city this weekend and that’s fantastic news for our local economy.

With the Manawatū Jazz & Blues Festival, Marist Sports Club Centennial, Palmerston North Brick Show, and the Pulse v Tactix netball clash all happening at once, the city is absolutely humming.

Weekends like this are a great reminder of the value events bring to our region — supporting accommodation providers, cafés, restaurants, retailers, transport operators, and so many other local businesses.

A huge thank you to the organisers, volunteers, venues, and businesses helping make Palmerston North such a vibrant place to visit.

👏 Thank You for Joining Us 👏

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to the Manawatū Regional Economic Update.

It was fantastic to see such strong engagement from across our business and wider community, with valuable discussion around the opportunities, challenges, and resilience of the Manawatū economy.

A key message from the evening stood out clearly — despite global uncertainty, supply chain pressures, and ongoing economic challenges, there is still a great deal happening across our region. Businesses in the Manawatū continue to show resilience, adaptability, and a determination to keep moving forward and “getting on with it.”

Thank you also to our speakers, partners, and supporters who helped make the evening possible and contributed to such an important regional conversation.
