When Fadiyha Fareen Khan moved from Fiji to New Zealand in 2017, it was with the hope of building a better future for her and her family.

“My family have seen every part of this journey. The hard moments and the good ones, so graduating means a lot to all of us.”

She recently graduated with a Bachelor of Health Science, majoring in Psychology.

Fadiyha has always been interested in healthcare and as she grew older, began to realise just how much mental health affects people’s lives. Coming to university straight from high school and studying psychology was a big adjustment and felt overwhelming at first but she soon found her confidence.

“I’ve learned so much from every part of this degree. I especially enjoyed my classes on campus and working with other students.”

Alongside her studies, Fadiyha was also involved in the student representative community - an experience she describes as incredibly rewarding.

Looking ahead, Fadiyha hopes to work in the mental health field, possibly as a social worker. Ultimately, she hopes to use her degree to support communities both in New Zealand and across the Pacific, including her home country of Fiji.

Congratulations Fadiyha!

2026 marks 50 years of teaching communication at Massey!

This photo is a throwback to campus in 1976, half a century ago, when studying for a career in communication looked very different. Students were learning to craft media releases, understand audiences and deliver clear messages in a world shaped by print, radio and television. Campaigns were slower, more linear and often built around one-way communication.

Today, those same foundations extend across social media, digital storytelling, real-time analytics and platform-first content creation.

Associate Professor Doug Ashwell, who has taught communication since 2000, says while technology has changed dramatically, the core purpose of communication has not.

“How to relate to people and talk to one another, that's what employers still look for. That's what we teach: how to connect to other people.”

Professor Elspeth Tilley adds that communication has become an essential capability across all sectors. Organisations now expect their people to be able to communicate clearly, quickly and effectively.

“As Massey marks 50 years of communication, our programme’s evolution reflects a simple truth. While the ways people communicate may continue to change, the need to connect, inform and engage, human to human, has never been more important.”

Cheers to 50 years of communication at Massey University.

When graduate Harrye Fredericksen crossed the stage to receive his Bachelor of Information Sciences in Data Science, there was someone in the crowd who understood exactly how special the moment was. His dad, Clayton.

Clayton travelled from Australia for the ceremony, bringing along the academic regalia he wore when graduating with a PhD from Australian National University in 1997. Nearly three decades later, father and son found themselves side by side in academic regalia, this time celebrating Harrye’s achievement.

While their academic paths took them into completely different fields, Harrye says having his dad’s support has been incredibly special.

Harrye completed his degree online while balancing part-time work and study, saying the flexibility of distance learning made it possible to pursue his goals in a way that worked for him. He’s now considering continuing his study journey with a master’s in geospatial data science.

Congratulations, Harrye!

✍️ You may have turned up to uni today but Stream took a short break!

Stream, the Student Portal and some other services were down momentarily but our team believe they have solved the issue. It will take some time for the services to reload so if you are still having issues, try refreshing your browser or restarting your computer to encourage it along.

Happy studying.
