Pūhoro puts the M in STEMM (Mātauranga). Mātauranga Māori is a rich Māori knowledge ecosystem

Pūhoro supports Rangatahi Māori within STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Mātauranga Māori) and seeks to pathway Māori into high value careers to revolutionise the landscape. Pūhoro currently operates in the Manawatū/Otaki, Hawkes Bay, Waikato, Auckland and Christchurch areas and will expand into further regions in 2022.

One of New Zealand's highest technology honours... and it belongs to our entire Pūhoro STEMM whānau. 💜

On Tuesday night, we were honoured to receive the inaugural Innovation for Impact and Purpose Award at the prestigious New Zealand CIO Innovation Awards. The award celebrates organisations using technology to create meaningful impact for Aotearoa, New Zealand.

As our Manahautū, Kemp Reweti, expressed…
"The real hero isn't the technological foundation that has enabled us to innovate and scale over the last decade. The real hero is our rangatahi."

This award belongs to every rangatahi who has been part of the Pūhoro journey, their whānau, our incredible kaimahi, Trust Board, schools, iwi, partners and supporters who continue to believe in our kaupapa.

Last week our Matatā Scholarship recipients came together to celebrate their journeys and share what inspires them to pursue careers in engineering.

They reminded us that engineering offers an exciting pathway for rangatahi, combining creativity, innovation, hands-on problem-solving and technical skills to create positive outcomes for communities and a stronger Aotearoa.

Their aspirations included:
⚙️ Solving real-world problems.
🌱 Designing more sustainable futures.
🏘️ Building resilient communities.
🤝 Working with people, not just for them.
✨ Inspiring more rangatahi to see a career in engineering.

It was a privilege to hear from Professor Dick Earle, whose generosity established the Matatā Initiative, and former Engineering New Zealand Chief Executive Andrew Cleland, who encouraged our tauira to embrace their role as future change-makers.

The future of engineering is in capable hands. 💙

Last week our PHF Science and BSI Toitū Te Whenua Scholarship recipients came together to celebrate their journeys and share their aspirations in STEMM.

Together, they reminded us that Pūhoro tauira aren't just earning qualifications, they are becoming doctors, scientists, researchers and leaders who are committed to improving outcomes for Māori in STEMM.

Their aspirations reflect what we work towards everyday...

🌱 They want to improve outcomes for Māori.
🩺 They want to address health inequities.
🔬 They want to protect our environment.
🌏 They want to return home and give back to their communities.
✨ And they want to inspire the next generation of rangatahi Māori to believe they belong in STEMM.

🗣️"Don't cut yourself out just because you feel like you don't have all the knowledge yet. Step outside of your comfort zone because internships like this can open pathways and support systems you never knew existed."

When Norrissalee applied for her Pūhoro internship with Ātea, she wasn't sure she had the right skills. By the end of the summer, she was helping make complex policy and digital infrastructure concepts more accessible for whānau and even presenting alongside Tū Ātea at Techweek in Pōneke. ✨

Supported by her supervisor, Hermione McCallum, and the wraparound support of the Pūhoro internship programme, Norrissalee discovered that growth happens when you challenge yourself.
