Pūhoro puts the M in STEMM (Mātauranga). Mātauranga Māori is a rich Māori knowledge ecosystem

Pūhoro supports Rangatahi Māori within STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Mātauranga Māori) and seeks to pathway Māori into high value careers to revolutionise the landscape. Pūhoro currently operates in the Manawatū/Otaki, Hawkes Bay, Waikato, Auckland and Christchurch areas and will expand into further regions in 2022.

Four Pūhoro tauira recently headed to the New Zealand Aerospace Summit in Ōtautahi, where they had the chance to connect with industry leaders, explore career pathways and get a glimpse into Aotearoa's growing aerospace sector.

Our Manahautū, Kemp Reweti, also joined a panel discussion, sharing whakaaro on the importance of creating more opportunities for Māori in STEM and emerging industries.

70+ rangatahi. Two NZDF camps. A whole lot of new experiences! ✈️⚓🪖

Last week, Pūhoro rangatahi from across Aotearoa took part in two four-day NZDF camps at Ōhakea Air Force Base and Devonport Naval Base.

These camps have been a longstanding part of our kaupapa, and give rangatahi the chance to experience life in the Defence Force.

Our rangatahi got stuck into confidence courses, flight simulators and team challenges. They also met with kaimahi from the Army, Navy and Airforce to learn more about the different trades, careers paths and perks of life in the forces.

💬 "The camp also changed my perspective on life, how to live, the opportunities that are available and where I could go."

For us, that's what it's all about. Creating opportunities for rangatahi to challenge themselves, build connections and be exposed to new career options.

A huge mihi to our mates at NZDF who continue to open their doors, share their experiences and invest in the next generation of rangatahi Māori. 🫶

And just like that, our wānanga for 2026 are wrapped! 🙌🏽

Our rangatahi came together to learn, connect, challenge themselves and build their confidence in STEMM.

A huge mihi to every rangatahi who showed up, gave things a go, and brought the energy and vibes to all of our wānanga. And a special shout out to our kaiako, kura, partners and wider Pūhoro whānau, who made these opportunities possible!

I rāwekeweke rātou ki ngā mahi whakamātau parahanga wai i te taha o te tīma Mātauranga Māori o Pūhoro, ā, i tūhura rātou i te manga o Turitea ki tō Hannah Rainforth taha, he pūkenga taiao.

He kaupapa whakahirahira tēnei hei whakawhānui i ngā wheako pūrau e hāngai ana ki ngā reo, ngā tuakiri, me ngā taiao o ā tātou rangatahi.

E whakaū ana tēnei kaupapa i te whakaaro kia toro atu ngā rangatahi Māori ki ngā kaupapa pūrau hei Māori tonu, ā, he wāhi tō te reo Māori me ōna tikanga ki ngā kaupapa katoa.

Last week, we delivered our first-ever wānanga entirely in te reo Māori.

Rangatahi from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Manawatū, Mana Tamariki and Te Kura-ā-Iwi o Ngāti Kauwhata came together for a day of hands-on learning focused on te taiao and wai.

Rangatahi explored water pollution with our Mātauranga Māori team and spent time at Turitea Stream for a practical freshwater session with Hannah Rainforth – Kaupapa Taiao Specialist

This milestone is an important step towards creating STEMM experiences that reflect the language, identities and immersion learning environments of our kura and rangatahi.

It reinforces that rangatahi Māori can explore STEM as Māori and that te reo and mātauranga belong across every part of STEM.

One of New Zealand's highest technology honours... and it belongs to our entire Pūhoro STEMM whānau. 💜

On Tuesday night, we were honoured to receive the inaugural Innovation for Impact and Purpose Award at the prestigious New Zealand CIO Innovation Awards. The award celebrates organisations using technology to create meaningful impact for Aotearoa, New Zealand.

As our Manahautū, Kemp Reweti, expressed…
"The real hero isn't the technological foundation that has enabled us to innovate and scale over the last decade. The real hero is our rangatahi."

This award belongs to every rangatahi who has been part of the Pūhoro journey, their whānau, our incredible kaimahi, Trust Board, schools, iwi, partners and supporters who continue to believe in our kaupapa.

Last week our Matatā Scholarship recipients came together to celebrate their journeys and share what inspires them to pursue careers in engineering.

They reminded us that engineering offers an exciting pathway for rangatahi, combining creativity, innovation, hands-on problem-solving and technical skills to create positive outcomes for communities and a stronger Aotearoa.

Their aspirations included:
⚙️ Solving real-world problems.
🌱 Designing more sustainable futures.
🏘️ Building resilient communities.
🤝 Working with people, not just for them.
✨ Inspiring more rangatahi to see a career in engineering.

It was a privilege to hear from Professor Dick Earle, whose generosity established the Matatā Initiative, and former Engineering New Zealand Chief Executive Andrew Cleland, who encouraged our tauira to embrace their role as future change-makers.

The future of engineering is in capable hands. 💙
