Today, our Term 5 Hospitality Management students visited voco Hotel as part of their Rooms Division Management paper.

The visit gave students an insight into revenue management and sustainability in hotels, and how these are applied in day-to-day operations.

It was also great to have QRC graduate Shehan and GM Jason showing our students around and sharing his industry experience! With seven QRC students currently working at voco, it's great to see so many familiar faces in the team.

⭐ Internship Spotlight: Liv Kusabs ⭐

Liv is currently completing her internship as a Customer Experience Agent at NZONE Skydive in Queenstown!

From welcoming customers to guiding them through their skydiving experience, Liv loves being part of creating unforgettable memories for people from all over the world.

A huge highlight so far has been getting to do a skydive with her colleagues, helping her build stronger connections with the team!

Working in a fast-paced environment has also helped Liv grow her confidence, communication skills and ability to adapt, all while gaining valuable experience in the adventure tourism industry.

Alumni Spotlight: Ella Riordan

As a Hospitality Management student, Ella Roirdan visited Winehouse during a site visit and remembers thinking, “One day, I would love to have her job.”

Today, she is back at the very same venue, this time managing it!

From weddings and events to leading a large team and becoming a shareholder in the business, Ella’s career has been shaped by saying yes to opportunities and continuing to challenge herself along the way.

⭐ Internship Spotlight: Poppy Hallam ⭐

Poppy is currently completing her internship at Waitomo Caves, working as a cave guide.

From guiding new people through Ruakuri Cave every day to learning more about the cave’s formations, history, ecosystem and glowworms, there’s always something new to take in.

A huge highlight for Poppy is getting to spend her days in the water, jumping off waterfalls and doing something that was her dream at the start of the year.

She’s also loved being part of such a welcoming and supportive team, who are always there to help when she has a question or faces a new challenge. While the role can be tough at times, Poppy is enjoying the chance to push herself, learn new skills and grow in confidence along the way.

⭐ Internship Spotlight: Poppy-Jade Katipa ⭐

Poppy is currently completing her internship at Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa, working as a Food and Beverage Attendant.

One of Poppy’s highlights has been working with a range of people from different places, along with watching the sunset each night from the restaurant.

Poppy has settled in well at Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa, with the people around her supporting her growth within the hospitality industry. She has also loved being shown around Broome and becoming familiar with the activities and experiences guests can enjoy while visiting.

She is now looking forward to seeing more of what happens behind the scenes and learning what it takes to manage a restaurant, while also enjoying a year-round summer!

And just like that, our Term 2 students are heading out into industry for their 9-month paid internship!

They’ll be putting their classroom learning into practice with hotels, resorts and adventure tourism businesses across New Zealand and overseas.

Internship is a huge part of the QRC journey, giving students the chance to gain real-world experience, build confidence, make industry connections and discover where a career in hospitality or tourism could take them.

Alumni Spotlight: Tamati Te Wai

Adventure Tourism Management graduate Tamati Te Wai has taken the skills and confidence he built through tourism into an exciting career.

After graduating from QRC, Tamati built his career across Queenstown’s tourism industry before COVID-19 led him to explore a completely different path.

Today, Tamati works as a Private Wealth Associate at Craigs Investment Partners, bringing the communication, relationship building and people skills he developed through QRC and the tourism industry into the world of finance.

Tamati’s journey shows that careers don’t always follow a straight path, and sometimes an unexpected change in direction can lead to an entirely new opportunity. 👏

⭐ Internship Spotlight: Nic Otaway ⭐

Nic is currently completing his internship at Skydive Mt Cook in Twizel, working across Ground Crew and Front of House.

A highlight of his internship so far has been completing a tandem skydive, giving him an even better understanding of the experience guests come to enjoy.

Nic has also been building a range of new practical skills specific to the role, including harnessing customers, supervising the landing area, and learning how to work safely around planes and other aircraft.

He is now looking forward to a busy summer season and continuing to grow his skills with the team at Skydive Mt Cook.

Alumni Spotlight: Hannah Hodgkinson

Hospitality Management graduate Hannah Hodgkinson has taken the skills and confidence she built through hospitality into an exciting career in Human Resources.

After starting out in Food & Beverage at Millbrook, Hannah moved into Human Resources before taking her career across the Tasman to Melbourne.

Today, Hannah works in HR at Sports Entertainment Network, combining her people skills with the fast-paced world of sport and media.

Hannah’s journey is a great reminder that the skills you build through hospitality can open doors to opportunities you may never have expected. 👏
