ideaschool

ideaschool Visual Arts & Design - Contemporary Music - Screen Production - Fashion ideaschool has a strong sense of community. We are ideaschool.

ideaschool embraces creativity in all its forms and teaches qualifications across a range of creative disciplines. Our programmes offer students a unique environment that brings together studio based practical learning with critical thinking and professional skills. Our programmes are highly sought after with waiting lists to get through the door. But we strictly limit our intake so that our progr

ammes stay small enough to ensure every student gets one on one attention. At ideaschool, you are not taught in lecture halls, rather you learn by doing - by being part of real life projects, using the latest equipment and technologies and supervised by artists and designers that are greatly respected in their field. Our students become articulate graduates with highly developed and sophisticated creative skills.

Congratulations Maia Harding who tonight was awarded the David Fine Scholarship at .heretaunga This Scholarship is awarded alternately to a Toimairangi (Te Wānanga o Aotearoa), or EIT IDEAschool arts or design student during their second year of study towards a bachelor degree.

The David Fine Scholarship was created to support aspiring artists and honour the legacy of David Fine, a bank manager and community leader who was instrumental in getting a community arts centre in Hastings established. The scholarship, offered by the Hastings District Community Arts Trust, contributes $2,500 towards the recipient’s course fees for their final year of study, along with covering the costs of an exhibition at Arts inc. Heretaunga.

Maia started her art and design journey with us at the Tairāwhiti campus where she completed her NZ Certificate in Art and Design [Level 3] before relocating to Taradale to continue her Level 4 studies before embarking on a Bachelor of Creative Practice. Maia is the 17th recipient of the David Fine Scholarship and we look forward to seeing her exhibition in 2026!

L- R David Fine’s son Martin, Hastings District Community Arts Trust chairman Graham Linwood, scholarship recipient Maia Harding, IDEAschool Programme Co-ordinator Raewyn Paterson

A few samples of the stunning work created by some of our NZ Certificate in Arts and Design [Level 4] students during their Body Adornment project. Akonga were taught foundations textile, pattern drafting, and laser cutting skills and then created their own personalised hoodie. A base hoodie pattern was altered and re drafted by each student to suit their individual design, then laser cut embellishments that reflect their identity in visual ideas - symbols, colours, patterns, objects, icons or motifs were applied to the garments by machine stitching.
