Last Sunday the University of Waikato Haumaru Sport & Recreation Centre celebrated its first birthday.
To celebrate the BayActive team hosted a free Community Fun Day, welcoming around 1,500 visitors.
As naming rights sponsors of the University of Waikato Haumaru Sport & Recreation Centre, we were stoked to be part of its first birthday celebrations.
Our Sport & Health team ran a hands-on activation, including vertical jump, Watt bike, grip strength and reaction time tests.
In just one year, Haumaru has become a busy hub for community connection, competition and recreation in central Tauranga. We are proud of our commitment to the Bay of Plenty region and our support of a facility that provides a positive connection point for the community.

We asked PhD graduate Dr Amanda Lowry what it was like giving the graduation speech at our April graduation ceremony — watch the reel to hear what she had to say.

Amanda’s research shares a perspective not often heard. As a highly impaired athlete, she explores the vital role of care and support behind the scenes.

Her work highlights the everyday realities faced by para-athletes with high support needs, and why recognising carers and properly resourcing support is key to making sport more inclusive.

Ōtanewainuku Forest is one of the best spots in the Bay to experience towering native trees, thriving birdlife and peaceful bush walks 🌿

There are a number of walks to explore within the forest, including the popular Ōtanewainuku Rimu Loop Walk - a gentle 3.8km track winding through stunning native bush and giant rimu trees. The loop takes around 1 hour 30 minutes and is suitable for walking children, with a side track leading to the beautiful Whataroa Falls swimming hole and picnic spot.

Ōtanewainuku is cared for by a dedicated volunteer trust helping to protect and conserve this special ngahere for future generations. Just a 30-minute drive from campus, it’s the perfect nature escape close to Tauranga 🚶‍♀️🌲

What is ‘assent’ in psychology and why is it more than just a yes or no?

We asked Dr. Amarie Carnett about the importance of assent, especially for people with complex communication needs.

In this reel, Dr. Carnett discusses why listening goes beyond verbal responses and how understanding behaviour, communication and individual choice plays an important role in ethical psychological practice.

Dr. Carnett is the Director of the Behaviour Analysis Programme and Senior Lecturer at the University of Waikato. She is also a doctorate-level Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA-D) with more than 15 years of experience in behaviour analysis and developmental disabilities.

📚 It’s Psychology Week, so keep an eye out for more psychology-related content!

Last month the School of Computing & Mathematical Sciences (CMS) was excited to host NZ Business Connect at the Tauranga Computing Lab, bringing together members of the local business and tech community for an engaging evening of ideas and innovation💡

One of our Senior Lecturers in Software Engineering, Jessica Turner, was invited to speak at the event. She shared insights from her research into Embodied AI - intelligent systems with a physical presence - drawing on real-world examples from service robots. Her talk explored how human-centred AI can deliver meaningful impact for businesses across Aotearoa.

How can psychology research better reflect Indigenous worldviews? 🌿

We spoke with Dr Ririwai Fox about how psychology research can better reflect Indigenous worldviews and why embedding Māori values, beliefs and practices into research matters.

Ririwai (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, Ngāti Porou) is a Kaupapa Māori researcher whose work centres on Māori cultural identity and the adaptive benefits of cultural embeddedness. His research explores how Māori worldviews can be integrated into quantitative psychology methods.

He is passionate about decolonising and indigenising academia, while supporting tauira Māori to thrive and succeed in education.
