Japan Airlines staff are welcoming a long awaited change as the airline introduces a new sneaker policy after years of requiring heels as part of the uniform.

For many employees, this shift is more than just a simple update in dress code. It reflects a growing focus on comfort, health, and practicality in the workplace. Standing for long hours, walking through airports, and working on flights can take a physical toll, and the move toward sneakers is seen as a step toward better support and well being for staff.

The change also highlights a broader cultural shift in Japan, where traditional expectations are gradually evolving to prioritize employee comfort without compromising professionalism. What was once considered standard is now being rethought, and many see this as a positive sign of progress within the industry.

For airline staff, it is a small change on the surface, but one that represents a meaningful improvement in their daily lives.

For years, this Japanese mayor was ridiculed for what many saw as an outrageous decision: spending billions of yen to build a massive floodgate to protect his small coastal village. Critics called it excessive, unnecessary, and a waste of public money. Even some locals questioned whether such an enormous structure would ever justify its cost.

Then came March 11, 2011.

When the devastating tsunami struck Japan following the Great East Japan Earthquake, countless coastal towns were overwhelmed in minutes. Entire neighborhoods were swept away, and thousands of lives were lost. But in this village, the outcome was different. The towering floodgate—once mocked as overkill—stood firm against the incoming waves, drastically reducing the force of the tsunami and preventing catastrophic destruction.

Because of that single, controversial decision, homes remained standing, infrastructure survived, and countless lives were saved. What had once been seen as political stubbornness was suddenly recognized as foresight, courage, and an unwavering commitment to protecting the community at all costs.

Today, the floodgate stands not just as a physical barrier against the sea, but as a powerful reminder of leadership that chooses long-term safety over short-term approval. The mayor who was once laughed at is now remembered for making the right call—long before anyone else understood just how necessary it would be.

Happy 85th Birthday to the one and only Hayao Miyazaki—a true legend, a master dreamer, and one of the greatest storytellers the world has ever known. 🎉🎂✨

For more than half a century, you have shaped not only animation, but the hearts and imaginations of millions across generations. Your films are not simply movies; they are living, breathing worlds filled with wonder, quiet melancholy, hope, and deep humanity. From floating castles and spirited bathhouses to peaceful countrysides and war-torn skies, you have shown us that magic does not exist as an escape from reality, but as a way to understand it more deeply.

Your stories teach us to listen to the wind, to respect nature, to question war, and to protect innocence in a fragile world. You remind us that kindness is powerful, that growth is often painful, and that beauty can be found in stillness as much as in adventure. Your characters—especially your brave, thoughtful young heroes—have inspired countless people to face life with courage, empathy, and curiosity.

Even at 85, your passion for creation continues to inspire artists, filmmakers, and dreamers everywhere. You have proven that age does not limit imagination, and that true art is born from sincerity, patience, and an unwavering belief in storytelling.

Thank you, Hayao Miyazaki, for the worlds you have given us, the emotions you have awakened, and the lessons you have quietly etched into our hearts. Your legacy will continue to soar through the skies, drift across the seas, and live on in every person who learned to dream because of your work. Happy 85th Birthday. 🌿✨
