Te Pūtahi Atawhai

Te Pūtahi Atawhai We are the on campus whanau for Māori and Pasifika students at Victoria University of Wellington, here to help you with holistic and academic support.

Student success is our success. This is the new official page for Te Pūtahi Atawhai, an on campus whanau at Victoria University Kelburn campus for Māori and Pasifika students. We provide both holistic and academic support in a culturally safe space. Throughout the academic year Te Pūtahi Atawhai puts on social events for its students, such as sausage sizzles, workshops and celebrations. Stop into

the office or follow our social media to get updates! The rooms are open from 9am, and include quiet study spaces, study spaces where you can have discussions, a deck to study on, mentoring rooms and a large computer suite with printers. Staff are available for appointments, or you can just drop in. If you are in need of advice about any aspect of university life, talk to Te Pūtahi Atawhai’s staff. They work within Māori and Pasifika cultural frameworks and look at every situation in the context of you as a whole. Drop in for wananga or tahaloa. They can design your own “kete”: an individual success package covering your personal, academic, family and sporting commitments. Talk to them about financial support and scholarships, time management and learning action plans, course guidance, study support, advocacy, staying well and being resilient, postgraduate study. We also produce ManuTV vlogs every two weeks, keep an eye out for new episodes on our youtube and facebook channels! We are here to help and nurture your journey as Victoria University students, so nau mai haere mai! Instagram: tuakana_vic

Today we honoured and farewelled Nicola and Garth who both have served Victoria University of Wellington with their service of leadership, mentorship, expertise & skills for the many years.

Last month we farewelled Anton O'Carroll and in a few weeks time we say farewell to our sister Dayna 😢.

With over 35 years of experience combined with all these 4 Warriors working at Victoria, It is only fitting that we honour them ALL today.

As we celebrate tonight with the 'Āiga including the sis Mary Moeono-Kolio. We are thankful for the time we shared together over the years through the good and challenging times as a whānau we pushed through with resilience, perserverance but above all UNITY and Aroha- Alofa.

We love you and we thankyou for all the hard work you have done and time invested to see success for our #1 Kaupapa- Our students during our years as a whānau o Te Pūtahi Atawhai 💛❤💙🙏🙌. Take a bow whānau. We are missing our glue Fabie in this picture- Love you Fabie.

'Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi engari he toa takitini'

(I come not with my own strengths but bring with me the gifts, talents and strengths of my family, tribe and ancestors)

Garth Wieser, Anton O'Carroll, Nicola Panapa & Dayna Eggeling- Our Māori staff of Te Pūtahi Atawhai, that quote echoes all sentiments of what life has been like working with you. You each have come with different strengths and brought this to the table along with your strong whakapapa- Idenity and your own individual personalities....

As we all pause and take time to reflect on 17 years since Te Pūtahi Atawhai (formerly known as Manaaki Pihipihinga) service first opened for students. For some of our colleagues at TPA we have worked for over half of those 17 years and a little more here in this beautiful whānau space supporting and cheering our biggest champions- (STUDENTS)

This week the Te Pūtahi Atawhai Pasifika whānau Sera Vatuloka, Kalo Afeaki, Jenny Taotua and Fa'amatuāinu Nonoa (Manager) held a precious Fijiian ceremony (ITatau) to farewell and wish our whānau (V.I.P) well on their new journey in 2019 as they depart from our whānau space in Student Union to join the newly established Āwhina (Māori support) team which will be based out of Te Herenga Waka Marae from Jan 7th.

There will also be the new Pacific Support Team which will be running as of January 7th from the former Te Pūtahi Atawhai space (SU Level 2). More details to come in the new year for current students.

The ITatau Ceremony was led by Maciu Raivoka (VUW Staff and well respected member of the Fijiian community in Wellington) as well as our long time friend of TPA and husband of Sera Vatuloka (Timoce Vatuloka) began the formalities with words of encouragement, love and thanks to our Māori Aiga.

Our team were then presented with Garlands of 'Aroha', 'Respect' and 'Gratitude' from the Pasifika Team. Then the Kava Ceremony- The highest honor to show our respect to our Māori staff who have worked tirelessly throughout the many years with us side by side.

It has been an amazing journey for our whānau of Te Pūtahi Atawhai. Working side by side and doing the mahi to ensure ALL Māori and Pasifika students including our Mentors get the best service possible.

Thank you for your leadership, Thank you for your dedication and commitment to the kaupapa. We appreciate you all, we acknowledge our Tangata Whēnua always in this space that we created together with Pasifika.

Whilst you leave us, we echo the words that Chief Maciu Raivoka said yesterday in the ceremony, in that we are not separating but rather we still remain like a double Hull canoe where we sail alongside each other, we all are heading in the same direction towards the same destination, how we get there will be different along the way, there will be bumps, challenges, but at the same time with Positivity, perseverance, resilience and aroha for one another we will reach the destination together- and that is to see Māori and Pasifika students succeed to the best of their ability and graduate.

We love you Garth, Anton, Dayna and Nicola💜💜💜

Thank you for being apart of the journey together!

'O le fogāva'a e tasi'- One Family!

Congratulations to graduates who walked across Michael Fowler Centre stage and at Te Herenga Waka Marae last week. All your hard work paid off! ✊🙌👏💜

‘Whaia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei’
It’s a beautiful sight seeing so many of our own graduate, seeing Māori representing Māori in an academic environment - if we aren’t graduating for ourselves let it be for our whānau, our friends and all those who look up to us when we least realise.
Ngā mihi ki a koutou for your inspirational mahi!
