World Voice Day — 16 April 🗣️💙

Our voices are part of how we communicate, express identity, and connect with others - and everyone’s voice is unique.

Speech-language therapists support a wide range of voice and communication needs, including individuals with voice difficulties, those seeking gender-affirming voice support, professional voice users, and people who use AAC or other forms of communication.

We also play a role in promoting vocal health and supporting safe, sustainable voice use across the lifespan.

This World Voice Day, we recognise and respect all voices — and all forms of communication. 💙

Mondays for Change is our weekly call for action on the gaps that need fixing:

About 83,000 New Zealanders live with dementia now, heading towards ~170,000 by 2050 — yet there is almost no dedicated SLT resource. Funding 10 dementia specialist SLTs nationwide would help people stay connected, independent, and safe for longer.

My kids found my animal bag today, so we currently have a zoo/aquarium on the lounge floor! These toys are such a great resource that so many of the beautiful little people that I work with enjoy!

What a way to start the school year! I have spent some time this morning with the passionate kaiawhina at Mangawhai Beach School. We chatted about my role, communication and that it can look different for different children, and the ways we can support their beautiful learners.

I am away on a mini-break camping with my family. It is a great opportunity to think of new approaches so that communication is accessible and inclusive within the community! Struggling to find a speech-language therapist (SLT)? You’re not alone.

Aotearoa has only around 22 SLTs per 100,000 people – among the lowest rates in the OECD. That means long waitlists and people missing out on help to communicate and swallow safely.

NZSTA is calling for targeted investment in three high-need areas:
🔹 Assistive Technology & AAC – so people who rely on devices are not waiting years to have a voice
🔹 Dementia – keeping people connected, independent and safe for longer
🔹 Residential disability services – making sure it is safe to eat and free to communicate in every home

Today is my last day in Mangawhai before Christmas! What a year! It has been so much fun with all my beautiful clients!
