Times are changing in Norway.

The late King Harald V, died yesterday, aged 89, after 35 years on the throne. He was a reformer who did much to modernise the Norwegian monarchy, including marrying a commoner who became Queen Sonja. He worked hard to unify his country and people, with an attitude reflected strongly in this speech he gave in 2016. King Harald was seen as a unifying figure and a force for stability. He was also a great-great-grandchild of England’s Queen Victoria.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his people at this sad time. He is succeeded by his eldest child, Haakon, who will reign as King Haakon VIII.

The king is dead. Long live the King!

This site, dating back to the Eleventh Century, continues to grow in size - and therefore importance - with its third major discovery in the last two years.

Using new methods, including remote sensing, a two-meter-thick stone wall foundation has been discovered buried outside of the historic Selja monastery by NIKU archaeologists.
