Check out the paper published by our co-directors Dr. Patrick Mullins and Dr. Amedeo Sghinolfi (along with Dr. Alicia Boswell) about the Chimú empire's influence on the chaupiyunga of the Moche and Carabamba/Virú valleys!

The chaupiyunga is a resource-rich ecological niche that connects the coast to the highlands, and its control was of key importance to states and empires that developed during Prehispanic times.

✨Our 2025 field season has officially come to an end!✨

This year, we:
🗿 Carried out archaeological excavations to better understand how and for how long this settlement was inhabited (stay tuned for more details about our findings!)
🤝 Engaged with the local community—sharing our goals and work with schoolchildren, teachers, and local authorities

We’re excited to analyze everything we’ve uncovered and share it soon with the community and fellow researchers!

Meet the intrepid Washington College students - Derek Sarier and Mac Sansbury - who joined the PAGuaL team this year!

Hello! My name is Derek Sarier, I am an aspiring archaeologist, and I just finished my first year at Washington College. This was my first time traveling abroad and I absolutely love Peru! At Cerro Sulcha, learning about its past inhabitants is simply fascinating. Working alongside the PAGuaL team has been a blast! One of my favorite finds was a fine atlatl (throwing spear) point!

Howdy! My name is Mac Sansbury and I’m a Senior at Washington College with majors in Philosophy and Anthropology. The sacred landscape of the Peruvian highlands is amazing! As I’ve engaged in research on the importance of “huacas” as sacred places that can be naturally occurring or humanmade, and their relation to Andean ontologies. My favorite find thus far has got to be ceramic dog head!

¡Hola! Me llamo Derek Sarier, soy un aspirante a arqueólogo y acabo de terminar mi primer año en Washington College. Esta fue mi primera vez viajando al extranjero y me encanta Perú. En Cerro Sulcha, aprender sobre sus antiguos habitantes es simplemente fascinante. ¡Trabajar con el equipo de PAGuaL ha sido fantástico! ¡Uno de mis hallazgos favoritos fue una excelente punta de átlatl (lanza arrojadiza)!

¡Hola! Me llamo Mac Sansbury y soy estudiante de último año en Washington College con especialización en Filosofía y Antropología. ¡El paisaje sagrado de la sierra peruana es asombroso! He investigado sobre la importancia de las huacas como lugares sagrados que pueden ser naturales o artificiales, y su relación con las ontologías andinas. ¡Mi hallazgo favorito hasta ahora tiene que ser una cabeza de perro de cerámica!

From the over 1000-year old ceramic dog head that we found at Cerro Sulcha to the many pooches that roam the streets today 🐾🏘️, dogs have always been loyal friends to Carabambinos 🐕💕

We were honored to welcome local teachers and students, representatives from the local municipality, members of the rondas campesinas (local autonomous community organizations), and officials from the Ministry of Culture 🇵🇪.

Sharing our discoveries with diverse audiences is at the heart of our work — and we’re excited to continue collaborating with the local community in the co-creation of knowledge 🤝✨📚

🌄 Welcome to Cerro Sulcha — an incredible archaeological site in Carabamba, Peru! 🇵🇪
During our 2024 field season, the PAGuaL team mapped this impressive site and chose it as our primary excavation location for 2025. 🏺 Since then, we’ve been digging deep—literally—and have uncovered evidence of human activity dating back over 2,000 years! ⛏️📜

Around this time last year, we started surveying sites on the Carabamba Plateau — including Cerro Sulcha, Cerro Quinga, and Shamana ⛰️✨ Using photogrammetry software, we’re bringing the architecture to life with detailed digital models of our drone imagery 🏛️💻 , which has guided where we are excavating this year! 🪏




El año pasado por estas fechas, empezamos nuestras reconocimientos de la meseta de Carabamba, como Cerro Sulcha, Cerro Quinga y Shamana ⛰️✨ Gracias al software de fotogrametría, estamos dando vida a la arquitectura con modelos digitales detallados de nuestras imágenes obtenidas con drones 🏛️💻 , que nos han servido de guía para excavar este año. 🪏
