Felipe Sonsong (also spelled SongSong), a Jesuit lay brother from Macabebe, Pampanga, is honored as a Servant of God and is regarded as a possible Kapampangan saint. Born into the principalia (ruling class) of Macabebe, he later became a native soldier under the Spanish flag and a master carpenter for ecclesiastical edifices in Manila. During his work with the Dominican Order, he received the scapular of the Cofradia de Santissimo Rosario and became an active member. Sonsong eventually joined the Society of Jesus as a lay brother, serving the mission with humility and devotion, though he had previously assisted Augustinian and Dominican missions.

In 1668, Felipe Sonsong, together with San Pedro Calungsod and fifteen other Filipino catechists, traveled to Guam to introduce Christianity under the Jesuit mission led by Padre Diego Luis de San Vitores, SJ. Even at an advanced age, he continued his missionary serviceโ€”sewing vestments, building churches, and supporting the local Chamorro communities.

During a Chamorro revolt against Spanish rule on 23 July 1684, Sonsong sustained a wound from an attempted beheading. Despite this, he lived faithfully for nearly two more years and died a martyr of the Catholic Church on 11 January 1686, at the age of 74. Fr. Lorenzo Bustillo, SJ, in his 1 February 1686 report, described him as a โ€œvery humble Brotherโ€ who โ€œdied with the reputation of a saint.โ€

Today, Sonsongโ€™s cause for sainthood is championed by the Friends of Felipe Sonsong, a multi-sectoral group of church leaders, academics, and private individuals. The Holy Angel University, through the Center for Kapampangan Studies, commissioned an official portrait depicting him in traditional Kapampangan attire, with Mt. Arayat, the Rio Grande de Pampanga, and the Jesuit seal as symbols of his faith and heritage.

Felipe Sonsongโ€™s life exemplifies humility, steadfast faith, and missionary zeal, reminding us that holiness is lived through service, courage, and dedication to God and neighbor.
