The Department of Biology is thrilled to share a new publication from one of our dedicated faculty members, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐂. 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐨, entitled “𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬: 𝐀𝐧 𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐨 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬.”

This research highlights the rich ethnobotanical knowledge and medicinal plant diversity found in urban gardens in Baguio City.

Dr. Barcelo is currently an Assistant Professor of Biology in the department with a specialization in ethnobotany, natural products, natural antioxidants, plant biology, and functional foods.

The Department of Biology congratulates our BS Biology students Sophia Rhys Q. Bañados, Stephanie U. Buenconsejo, and Jherome G. Pangilinan, for receiving a research grant under the 2026 DOST-PCHRD Undergraduate Thesis Grant in Natural Products (First Call)!

The team, under the guidance of Dr. Ailyn Fadriquela and Dr. Roland Hipol, secured the grant for their study, “Phytochemical Profiling and In Vivo Neuroprotective Evaluation of Dillenia philippinensis Leaf Extract in Caenorhabditis elegans.”

The Cordillera Regional Health Research and Development Consortium (CRHRDC) proudly congratulates the research team from the University of the Philippines Baguio for receiving support under the 2026 DOST-PCHRD Undergraduate Thesis Grant in Natural Products (First Call).

Their funded study, “Phytochemical Profiling and In Vivo Neuroprotective Evaluation of Dillenia philippinensis Leaf Extract in Caenorhabditis elegans,” is led by student researchers Sophia Rhys Q.
