Their successful completion of this prestigious course reflects their unwavering dedication to professional excellence, steadfast leadership, and faithful service to the nation.

Special recognition is accorded to LT CYRONIEL E ANDOY PN for graduating Rank No. 2 among 75 students and earning the High Distinction, an outstanding achievement that exemplifies exceptional leadership and academic excellence. Likewise, commendation is extended to CPT JAY AR A PASCULADO PN(M) for earning the Highest Grade in Military Decision-Making and graduating with Distinction, a testament to his superior operational insight and sound military judgment. The Eleven General Orders are the foundation of guard and sentry duties, serving as the universal standard of conduct for individuals entrusted with protecting lives, property, and critical facilities. Their origins can be traced to the General Orders for Sentries of the United States military, which established a uniform set of instructions to ensure discipline, vigilance, and accountability among personnel assigned to security duties. Through years of professional practice and training, these principles have been adopted by military organizations, law enforcement agencies, and security institutions in many countries, including the Philippines.

In the Philippines, the Eleven General Orders form an essential part of the training of members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and licensed private security professionals. Regardless of organization or assignment, these orders provide a common framework for the proper performance of security responsibilities. They emphasize the importance of safeguarding lives and property, maintaining constant vigilance, enforcing lawful orders, reporting unusual incidents, respecting the chain of command, and responding decisively to emergencies.

Among them is the Desiderata—one of the most challenging pieces of military knowledge memorized and recited by cadets during training, particularly at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA). Its length and depth make it difficult to master, but its enduring wisdom makes every word worth remembering.

More than just a poem, Desiderata is a guide for living with honor, humility, resilience, and inner peace. It reminds future officers to remain calm amid adversity, speak the truth with courage, respect others regardless of their station in life, and stay steadfast even in the face of uncertainty. It teaches that true strength is not measured by physical power alone, but also by character, discipline, and compassion.

For generations of military leaders, memorizing the Desiderata has been more than an academic requirement—it has been an exercise in developing the mindset expected of an officer and a gentleman. Long after graduation, its timeless words continue to serve as a moral compass in both military service and everyday life.

The latest act of violence and harassment committed by the China Coast Guard against Philippine Navy personnel stationed at the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal adds to a clear pattern of provocative and hostile behavior, and further contributes to the People’s Republic of China’s deficit of trust and credibility.

Against the backdrop of the PRC’s circumvention of international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and disregard of the final and binding 2016 Arbitral Tribunal Ruling on the South China Sea, their actions further justify the Department’s position of disengagement—we simply cannot trust this belligerent neighbor.

The professionalism and resolve shown by our military personnel compel us to strengthen our resolve, build up our deterrence, shore up our alliances, and bolster our national commitment to safeguard what is rightfully ours.

As we continue to monitor and prepare measures to meet this aggression, the Department of National Defense salutes the defenders of BRP Sierra Madre and our western frontier. We will not back down.

Don't Quit

Every Philippine Military Academy cadet remembers the Recognition Rites—a defining milestone earned only after enduring the demanding weeks of Beast Barracks. The embrace between an upperclassman and a plebe is more than a tradition; it symbolizes acceptance into the Corps of Cadets, the reward for perseverance, discipline, and unwavering determination. It is a reminder that every hardship has a purpose, and that every challenge overcome builds the character of a future leader and defender of the nation.

That same spirit is captured in Edgar A. Guest's timeless poem, Don't Quit. Its message transcends generations: there will be moments when the burden feels overwhelming, when progress seems impossible, and when giving up appears to be the easiest path. Yet history is often written by those who chose to endure one more day, take one more step, and fight one more battle.

Success rarely belongs to the strongest or the fastest—it belongs to those who refuse to surrender. Whether in military service or in life's daily struggles, victory often comes just beyond the point where most people would have given up.

As the poem reminds us:
