The University of the Philippines Baguio, through the College of Arts and Communication (CAC), College of Social Sciences (CSS), and the Fine Arts Program, hosted a two-day series of artist talks on April 23-24, 2026, featuring notable Filipino artists from the fields of film and visual arts.
On April 23, National Artist for Film and UP alumnus Kidlat Tahimik discussed his installation “Cinema Indio/Cinema Tonton,” currently exhibited at the CSS Grounds. The session held at the CSS Audio-Visual Room explored the cultural and artistic dimensions of his work, emphasizing indigenous creativity and self-determined expression. He encouraged participants to cultivate originality in their practice, sharing “Kailangang sariling duende mo, ‘yong ‘indio-genius’ duende ang lalabas sa final works ninyo, or sa whatever career you make.”
Noting the strong support and attendance primarily from the faculty and students of the Department of Anthropology, Sociology, and Psychology (DASP), he graciously adapted his discussion to weave in psychological concepts, specifically exploring the Filipino core value of kapwa and the concept of the self in others.
On April 24, the Fine Arts Program, in partnership with FA 192 BC 1, held a second artist talk at Teatro Amianan featuring Pepot Atienza, a multidisciplinary artist recognized for his work in children’s content, illustration, and filmmaking. Atienza discussed his creative process and advocacy, offering insights into his practice across various artistic forms.
The two-day series provided students and the public with opportunities to engage with diverse artistic perspectives, fostering dialogue on creativity, cultural identity, and contemporary art practice.
