On November 11, The KASAMA/SSC SONAHBS Assembly sent a letter requesting for Academic Leniency and Temporary Suspension of Classes due to the widespread effects of Typhoon Uwan to the SLU Administration.

Through the sensing form, the council received numerous feedbacks from the students regarding the following issues:

𝟭. 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀
𝟮. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀
𝟯. 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆

In light of these circumstances, the KASAMA/SSC SONAHBS Assembly respectfully endorses and echoes the following measures for consideration, in alignment with the broader call of the Executive Committee:

𝟭. 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟮, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱
𝟮. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟰, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 (𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆)

We recognize that this period is crucial. However, we firmly believe that prioritizing the 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆, 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 is vital to ensuring meaningful and effective learning once regular operations resume. Bananas: Nature's Potassium-Powered Radiators

Bananas owe their slight radioactivity to potassium-40, a naturally occurring isotope found in potassium. This mineral is essential for health, playing a vital role in regulating heart function and muscle contractions. Luckily, the radiation emitted by bananas is so minuscule that it poses no risk to humans (US Environmental Protection Agency, 2022).

Scientists even have a quirky term for this phenomenon—the "Banana Equivalent Dose"—used to explain radiation exposure in everyday terms. Eating a banana exposes you to about 0.1 microsieverts of radiation, which is completely harmless. In fact, you'd need to eat 10 million bananas all at once for the radiation to become dangerous (National Institute of Standards and Technology, n.d.).

Proof that bananas aren’t just good for you—they’re literally glowing with health! 🍌✨

The 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝗴-𝗮𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 is proud to announce the second year of its outreach program through 𝙉𝘼𝙈𝙉𝘼𝙈𝘼: 𝘿𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙪𝙮𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙞 𝘼𝙮𝙖𝙩. It will be held tomorrow, April 6, 2025, at Barangay Happy Hollow, Baguio City, the chosen beneficiary of this initiative—touching the lives of those in need, such as indigent families and children.

In partnership with SLU - Nursing Program, City Health Services - Baguio City, Happy Hollow Barangay Officials, Summer Capital Eagles Club, United Igorots: Golden Eagles Club, United Benguet Builders: Golden Eagles Club, Nurse Pals Medical Supplies Trading, Luminary Scholars Society, SLU - Nursing Alumni Association International, and all student nurses from Levels 1-4, the organization aims to extend compassion, promote health, and bring joy through community service initiatives and health advocacy efforts.

In contrast, this outreach also serves as a platform for nursing students to practice empathy, leadership, and hands-on community involvement beyond the four walls of the classroom.

It is not just about giving material aid, but about fostering meaningful connections, raising awareness on health issues, and empowering the community through education and presence.

Last March 29, 2025, the Samahang Mag-aaral ng Nursing - Academic Competence Committee, in partnership with SLU Luminary Scholars Society, held their fourth session at the 5th floor of Diego Silang Building for "Kardex & Endorsement: Guide to Patient Handovers."

The session was attended by student nurses from different levels of the Nursing program.

Ms. Shaina Irene Magno from BSN 4 led the session on how to properly endorse patients from different wards to another, as well as proper documentation via Kardex.

This session was facilitated by Academic Competence Committee Members LJ Harry Manansala, Alyssa Chang, and Jhianne Mylz Parañal, together with Renee Rio Picpican, the Academic Competence Coordinator.

THE FIRST TRANSFUSION THAT SPARKED PROGRESS

In 1492, Pope Innocent VIII fell into a coma, and Abraham Myere of Balmes attempted to revive him by transfusing blood from three young boys. With no understanding of circulation or blood types, the procedure failed, resulting in the deaths of both the donors and the pope.

It wasn’t until the 1600s that scientists, such as William Harvey, uncovered the basics of blood circulation, leading to early animal-to-human transfusions. Further breakthrough came in 1901 when Karl Landsteiner discovered blood types, enabling safe human-to-human transfusions. Today, modern medicine ensures that blood donation is a safe, lifesaving act.

What once ended in tragedy now saves millions of lives each year. By donating blood, one becomes a part of a life-giving history.
