A faculty member from the Department of English and Humanities (DEH), Dr. Allan Jay Esteban, presented a research paper at the 8th Linguistic Society of the Philippines International Conference (LSPIC 2026), held at West Visayas State University in Iloilo City from April 23 to 25, 2026.

Dr. Estebanโ€™s paper, titled โ€œDismantling Native-Speakerism in ASEAN ELT,โ€ examined the enduring bias toward native English-speaking teachers in English language teaching (ELT) across Southeast Asia. Despite comparable or even superior qualifications, non-native English-speaking educators often face systemic disadvantages in hiring practices, professional recognition, and classroom authority.

Using a thematic systematic review, the study analyzed how native-speakerism manifests in recruitment policies, workplace treatment, learner perceptions, and broader discourses surrounding linguistic authority. The findings highlight how such biases continue to shape institutional and pedagogical norms in the region.

The paper calls for more equitable ELT policies and advocates for a shift in perspectiveโ€”recognizing English as a global lingua franca rather than the property of native speakers. It further emphasizes the need to challenge entrenched nativist ideologies and to promote inclusivity and professionalism in language education across ASEAN.

The conference gathered linguists, educators, and researchers from various institutions to discuss current issues and future directions in linguistics and language education under the theme of charting future-ready pathways.

Dr. Estebanโ€™s participation reflects the universityโ€™s continued commitment to advancing research and contributing to critical conversations in language education at both national and international levels.
