NEWS ADVISORY: The Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON) will stage a nationwide transport strike on Thursday, March 19, 2025. The nationwide stoppage of PUV services is due to unprecedented hikes in pump prices over the past several weeks.

PISTON’s main demands are the suspension of fuel taxes, rollback of pump costs, and an increase in fares.

In other news, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has approved a provisional fare increase for PUVs that will take effect coinciding with the transport strike. The provisional fare hikes will become permanent if operators can secure the updated matrices before June.

The fare increases are as follows:

Traditional PUJs: P14 for the first four kms and P2 for every succeeding km
Modern PUJs: P17 for the first four kms and P2.40 for every subsequent km

Ordinary city buses: P15 for the first five kms and P2.49 for every succeeding km
Air-conditioned city buses: P18 for the first five kms and P2.97 for every succeeding km.

TNVS: P20 increase in base fare with no increase in kilometrage.

Everyone is advised to take alternative routes and modes of transport during the strike.

RED JUDICATA: SEMPER VICTORES 🏆

IN PHOTOS: Surviving the clutch, SBU-COL Men’s Basketball Team rose to the top with a 60-57 victory against Ateneo Law School to repeat its title run at the ALSP-NCR Conflicts of Law 2026 on Sunday, March 8.

SBU-COL struck a dagger in the first half, 35-30, but ALS closed the gap in the third quarter before eventually taking the lead.

It was a neck-on-neck battle come the fourth quarter but the Red Lions pulled through with 10 seconds left on the clock, riding on the free throws of De Vega and Villalon to break away with a three-point cushion in favor of the Mendiola-based squad.

On the pitch, the football team ended its campaign with a bronze finish against Lyceum Law in a dominant 5-1 decision.

After a nil-nil first half, the Red Booters kicked into high gear in the second half as men of the match Jeremiah Bernaldez and Miguel Alfonso Añonuevo both had braces, while Carli Recio III found the back of the net once.

This International Women’s Day, thebarrister stands in recognition of the strength, brilliance, and genius of women.

Across generations and professions our Filipino women continue to lead and transform society. From homes to halls of power, from classrooms to courtrooms, they claim spaces once denied to them and shape a future defined by excellence, perseverance, and progress.

Consequently, the observance of International Women’s day is not only a cultural celebration. It is also anchored in legal bases that recognize and affirm the vital role of women in Philippine society:

• Proclamation No. 224 (1988) – Declaring the first week of March as Women’s Week

• Proclamation No. 227 (1988) – Providing for the observance of March as Women’s Role in History Month

• Republic Act No. 6949 (1990) – Declaring March 8 of every year as National Women’s Day

Today and every day, we celebrate women who lead, uplift, and redefine what is possible.

Happy National Women’s Month. Abante babae! 🌸

IN PHOTOS: SBU-COL continue golden medal haul at the penultimate day of ALSP-NCR Conflicts of Law 2026 🏆

The swimming team won two gold medals and scored a podium finish in every swim event led by Kervi Cantimbuhan gold-winner performance of 41.83 seconds after a close race against San Sebastian College-Recoletos (SSCR) at the 50-meter men’s breaststroke. Charles Soriano impressed at the 50-meter men’s butterfly, handily winning the gold medal at 31.63 seconds, ending the race at least two seconds ahead of his competitors. Cantimbuhan and Soriano also bagged silver medals at the 50-meter men’s freestyle and breaststroke, respectively.

On the women’s side, Mitzi Lumantao took the silver medal at the 50-meter women’s breaststroke with a 50.73-second time. Last year’s bronze medalist, Christine David, won again for 3rd place at the 50-meter women’s breaststroke event with an impressive 59.61-second finish.

On the hard court, SBU women’s volleyball team charged into the crown, first overpowering SSCR in the semifinals with a dominant straight-sets victory, 25–13 and 25–17, to punch their finals ticket. Carrying that momentum into the title match against UST, the Red Lions SBU early with commanding wins in Sets 1 and 2, 25–10 and 25–21, before weathering a gritty UST comeback in Sets 3 and 4. Refusing to fold, SBU roared loudest in the decisive Set 5, 15–9, to clinch the championship title.

As the reigning titleholders, the men’s volleyball team showcased their signature firepower against ALS in the semifinals with a 2-0 sweep, 25-21, 25-15. After a dominant streak, SBU was put to the ultimate test when Arellano showed fierce resistance, proving that the championship title is not given, but earned. While SBU dominated in the opening set 25-13, the momentum shifted in the second set when both teams went neck and neck with a 23-25 cliffhanger. In true unyielding Bedan spirit, the Red Lions weathered the storm at the last set 25-20, leaving no room for a comeback and successfully defending their throne.

In the thrilling basketball semifinals clash, SBU punched its ticket to the Finals after a tense face-off with AUSL in the semifinals. Despite a neck-and-neck battle leaving some players injured due to the intense match, SBU prevailed with a 59-51 win, showing their grit and determination down to the final buzzer. The men’s basketball championship game is expected to be held next week, on March 8.

The Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) squad also won silver honors in e-sports, led by team captain Rafael Somoray playing as the Jungler, Ruther Alcantara on the EXP Lane, Zeus Ebdane as the Roamer, KZ Emmanuel Revilla on the Gold Lane, and Reyward Montero on the Mid Lane.

Finally, the Debate Team led by Ysa Gonzales, Frences Cesista, Arvin Camariño, and Aria Serrano are the ALSP-NCR Conflicts’ Debate Tournament Champions. This, coming after their already impressive 3rd place finish at the Philippine Law Debate Circle 2026 earlier this year.

Democracy lives where the people stand their ground

On the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, millions of Filipinos transformed Epifanio de los Santos Avenue into a living testament of courage, ending the decades-long rule of Ferdinand Marcos Sr., marked by silence, fear, and oppression. Sparked by the martyrdom of Benigno Aquino Jr. and a rigged election against Corazon Aquino, ordinary citizens chose to stand their ground.

For four days, their resolve led them to confront tanks and unity to topple tyranny. No guns, only determination. No commands, only solidarity.

The uprising proved one undeniable truth: power never resided in Malacañang Palace; it has always lived with the people.
