Two faculty members of the MMSU College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development (CAFSD) actively participated in international learning engagements in Southeast Asia in April 2026, gaining insights on agricultural innovation and contributing expertise on climate resilience.
Prof. Frances Batara joined a hybrid training program organized by the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), while Dr. Julius Jimenez served as resource speaker at a seminar organized by the Asian Institute of Technology - Regional Resources Center for Asia and the Pacific (AIT RRC.AP), with support from the Ministry of the Environment in Japan.
Prof. Batara was among the 19 participants from SEARCA member-countries who attended the training-workshop titled Transformational Agricultural Innovation System (AIS) for the New Future. The program featured online sessions held on April 6, 8, 13, and 15, followed by in-person sessions from April 27-30 at Universiti Putra Malaysia in Selangor, Malaysia.
Through expert-led discussions, workshops, collaborative learning activities, and site-visits, participants explored how AIS can contribute to building resilient, inclusive, and future-ready agri-food systems across the Southeast Asian region.
Her participation in the training serves as SEARCAโs support to MMSU as a new affiliate member of the University Consortium (UC). She thanked the SEARCA for the training grant, and MMSU for its endorsement and support of her application. She also looks forward to implementing the proposed AIS action plan at MMSU and strengthening the universityโs partnerships with SEARCA member-universities.
Meanwhile, Dr. Jimenez presented FloodS and ClimoCast applications for climate projection and scenario analysis during the seminar on Local Adaptation Planning Tools for Urban Flood Resilience held on April 27 at the Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia.
He also shared practical insights on how climate data, flood maps, and model outputs can support planning, preparedness, and climate adaptation decisions to the participants.
The international seminar gathered policymakers, researchers, and practitioners working on the frontlines of climate adaptation across the Asia-Pacific region.
Dr. Jimenez thanked the AIT RRC.AP and MMSU for the opportunity to participate in the regional exchange and conveyed his hope for continued collaboration in advancing geospatial and data-drive approaches for climate resilience.
For his part, CAFSD Dean Charlie Batin lauded the faculty members for their international engagements and thanked them for representing the college.
โThese engagements highlight CAFSDโs commitment to international collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the advancement of sustainable and climate-responsive development initiatives,โ he said.
