The MMSU College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development (CAFSD) honored 353 graduating students during the Gawad Luntian 2026 on May 29 at the University Covered Court.

With the theme, โ€œWhere Excellence Flourishes from Field to Future,โ€ the annual event highlighted the graduandsโ€™ academic achievements, recognizing them with certificates and medals for completing the requirements of their respective degree programs.

Academic excellence awards were given to the top five graduands in each program based on the highest General Weighted Average. In addition, 108 students received special awards: 74 for leadership, 20 for research presentation and publication, 13 for sports, and seven for internationalization.

Guest of honor and speaker For. Joseph Lewilyn Acang, chief of monitoring and enforcement section of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), urged the graduands to use their skills to uplift their families and communities.

Representing MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr., Vice President for Academic Affairs Aris Reynold V. Cajigal encouraged the students to remain grounded in MMSU values and to lead with integrity in their future careers and communities.

CAFSD Dean Charlie B. Batin congratulated the graduands for their dedication and thanked their parents for allowing the college to be part of their childrenโ€™s academic journey. CAFSD Alumni Association President Mark Allan Abad led the oath-taking of the graduands as incoming members of the club.

Of the 353 candidates for graduation, 323 are from the second semester of Academic Year 2025-2026, 22 from the first semester of the same academic year, and eight from the midyear term of Academic Year 2024-2025.

The graduands include 224 from BS Agriculture (Batac and Dingras campuses), 43 from BS Environmental Science, 25 from BS Agribusiness, 23 from BS Food Technology, 20 from BS Forestry, and 18 from BS Development Communication. Fifteen are Latin honorees: eight from BSA, five from BSES, and one each from BSAB and BSFT. Jay Lester Baclig (BSA major in Crop Science) leads the graduating class.

They will receive their diplomas during the MMSUโ€™s 48th Commencement Exercises on June 11 at the Sunken Garden.

๐—œ๐—ก ๐—ฃ๐—›๐—ข๐—ง๐—ข๐—ฆ | NSTP-CWTS students at CAFSD present community-based projects

First year students of the MMSU College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development (CAFSD) enrolled in the National Service Training Program - Civic Welfare Training Service (NSTP-CWTS) presented their community-based outputs in a culminating activity held on May 6 at the college accreditation room.

The event provided a venue for students to showcase their outputs by class, highlighting their learning experiences, community engagement, and the practical application of knowledge and skills gained through the NSTP-CWTS program.

Prof. Lee Zhemryr Grande, NSTP coordinator, said the outputs were evaluated by a panel of experts to determine the top three projects that will represent the college in the MMSU-wide NSTP competition.

The evaluators included Mr. Joel Cabading, director of the Philippine Carabao Center at MMSU; Prof. Rodel Reyes, chief for student discipline under the MMSU Office of Student Affairs and Services; Prof. Jayferson Panilo, faculty member of the University Laboratory Schools in Batac; and Ms. Abegel Joson, chief for technology promotion and demonstration services at the University Extension Directorate.

Out of 13 outputs, the top three projects were Bridging Classroom Theory and Civic Action, Community Service and Waste Management Project, and Strengthening Food Security through Vegetable Gardening and Environment Clean-up, implemented by BS Agriculture 1B, 1C, and 1D classes, respectively.

CAFSD Dean Charlie B. Batin lauded the students for implementing and presenting outputs that showcased their skills and passion for community- building. He also thanked the NSTP coordinator and facilitators in the college for initiating the event and expressed hope for its continuity.

Prof. Grande added that the selection of the Best NSTP Implementer and Excellence Awards will be launched at the opening of the new academic year.

Mandated by Republic Act 9163, NSTP aims to enhance civic consciousness and defense preparedness among Filipino youth. CWTS, one of its three components, focuses on activities that contribute to the general welfare of communities.

๐—ก๐—˜๐—ช๐—ฆ | CAFSD profs represent MMSU in international events in Malaysia, Indonesia

Two faculty members of the MMSU College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development (CAFSD) actively participated in international learning engagements in Southeast Asia in April 2026, gaining insights on agricultural innovation and contributing expertise on climate resilience.

Prof. Frances Batara joined a hybrid training program organized by the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), while Dr. Julius Jimenez served as resource speaker at a seminar organized by the Asian Institute of Technology - Regional Resources Center for Asia and the Pacific (AIT RRC.AP), with support from the Ministry of the Environment in Japan.

Prof. Batara was among the 19 participants from SEARCA member-countries who attended the training-workshop titled Transformational Agricultural Innovation System (AIS) for the New Future. The program featured online sessions held on April 6, 8, 13, and 15, followed by in-person sessions from April 27-30 at Universiti Putra Malaysia in Selangor, Malaysia.

Through expert-led discussions, workshops, collaborative learning activities, and site-visits, participants explored how AIS can contribute to building resilient, inclusive, and future-ready agri-food systems across the Southeast Asian region.

Her participation in the training serves as SEARCAโ€™s support to MMSU as a new affiliate member of the University Consortium (UC). She thanked the SEARCA for the training grant, and MMSU for its endorsement and support of her application. She also looks forward to implementing the proposed AIS action plan at MMSU and strengthening the universityโ€™s partnerships with SEARCA member-universities.

Meanwhile, Dr. Jimenez presented FloodS and ClimoCast applications for climate projection and scenario analysis during the seminar on Local Adaptation Planning Tools for Urban Flood Resilience held on April 27 at the Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia.

He also shared practical insights on how climate data, flood maps, and model outputs can support planning, preparedness, and climate adaptation decisions to the participants.

The international seminar gathered policymakers, researchers, and practitioners working on the frontlines of climate adaptation across the Asia-Pacific region.

Dr. Jimenez thanked the AIT RRC.AP and MMSU for the opportunity to participate in the regional exchange and conveyed his hope for continued collaboration in advancing geospatial and data-drive approaches for climate resilience.

For his part, CAFSD Dean Charlie Batin lauded the faculty members for their international engagements and thanked them for representing the college.

โ€œThese engagements highlight CAFSDโ€™s commitment to international collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the advancement of sustainable and climate-responsive development initiatives,โ€ he said.

To accelerate the production of instructional materials (IMs), the MMSU College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development (CAFSD) conducted a training-workshop on IM development on April 21 at the College Accreditation Room.

The activity was participated in by 25 CAFSD faculty members who were unable to attend the same training held in November 2023. They were trained on preparing IM proposals following the guidelines and templates established by the MMSU Instructional Materials Development Office (IMDO).

Dr. Bryan Eli B. Sadorra, IMDO Chief, discussed the IM development process at MMSU, and guided the participants in preparing their required outputs.

CAFSD Dean Charlie B. Batin expressed hope that the training would result in an increased number of IM proposals progressing toward completion and publication.
