The Department of Social Sciences congratulates, Assoc. Prof. Rex-Belli L. Alejandro for being elected as the new MMSU Faculty Association, Inc. President, during the election held at the MMSU Teatro Ilocandia, August 14, 2025.

Prof. Alejandro served as the president of the MMSU College of Arts and Sciences Educators' Society (CAS Faculty Association), and is currently the department chair of the MMSU CAS Department of Social Sciences.

We are so proud of you Sir Rex, and we wish you all the best as the new faculty regent.

𝗗𝗦𝗦’𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗞 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀' 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

As part of its ongoing efforts to empower communities, the Department of Social Sciences (DSS), through Project TALEK, recently conducted a trainers’ training on barangay financial management. The activity aimed to equip faculty members with the knowledge and skills necessary to train barangay officials on financial management, budgeting, accounting, and other related topics. The training was held on May 15, 2025, at the MMSU National Bioenergy Research and Innovation Center (NBERIC) Mini Conference Room.

The sessions were led by 𝗠𝗿𝘀. 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗲 𝗠. 𝗕𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗴𝗼𝘀, Administrative Officer IV, and 𝗠𝗿. 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲 𝗗. 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗮𝗱𝗮, Administrative Officer II, both from the Office of the City Budget Officer, City Government of Batac. They shared their expertise on public financial management, discussing the budget process, procedures, and common challenges at both the barangay and city levels. They also highlighted key aspects of financial management specific to the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK).

This initiative is part of the preparation for a forthcoming community extension project that will benefit the local government units of Barangays Sacritan, Liliputen, and Lumbaan-Bicbica in the Municipality of Pinili.

𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘛𝘈𝘓𝘌𝘒—𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘓𝘎𝘜 𝘖𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘌𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘢𝘯 𝘌𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘚𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵—is one of the component projects under the PANAG-TARIBAY TI ILI Extension Program of the Department.

This endeavor marks a step closer to strengthening local governance through capacitated academic trainers and empowered community leaders.

NOW HAPPENING: Panag-Taribay Ti Ili Project TALEK's Trainers' Training on Barangay Financial Management.

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Department of Social Sciences (DSS) is currently holding a trainers' training for Financial Management, a component of the Department extension program, Panag-Taribay ti Ili which aims to empower communities on good governance, mental health, civic education, and financial literacy and management.

The first topic features Ms. Christine Mae M. Bayangos, Budget Officer II of the City Government of Batac, delivering a lecture titled: FISCAL FORTITUDE: Skill-building among Faculty Trainers on Barangay-Level Financial Management.

As the 2025 elections approach, the MMSU Department of Social Sciences of the College of Arts and Sciences conducted an eye-opening dialogue on vote-buying, political ethics, and voter behavior in the second episode of Tungtongan: Conversations on Ilokano Public Life. Held on May 7, the forum brought together experts in political science, economics, philosophy, and sociology to urge informed, ethical, and accountable voting.

𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 | MMSU Tungtongan sparks interdisciplinary conversation to 'Make Ballots Great Again'

As the 2025 Philippine elections draw near, the Department of Social Sciences (DSS) of the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) delved into pressing electoral concerns in the second episode of “Tungtongan: Conversations on Ilokano Public Life” on May 7 at the CAS Audio-Visual Room.

Titled “VoteVIBE 2025: Make Ballots Great Again,” the conversation cast a critical lens on vote-buying and vote-selling, issues that continue to shape electoral culture in the country. The multidisciplinary discussion featured faculty members in political science, economics, philosophy, sociology, and development studies.

Political science professor Atty. Lorma Auria Cuadro opened the discussion by underscoring the right to vote as an essential tool of accountability in a democracy. She emphasized that voter participation not only reflects the people’s voice but also reveals trends in political behavior.

Mr. John Wel Pascua, an instructor in economics, explored vote-selling from an economic perspective. He explained how the practice may offer short-term private gains but results in long-term societal costs such as deepened poverty, skewed competition, and misaligned policy priorities.

From a philosophical standpoint, Mr. Rommel John Obena challenged the audience to treat voting as a rational and ethical duty. He warned against fallacies and cognitive biases, like emotional appeal, bandwagon thinking, and material persuasion, that often cloud electoral judgment.

Sociology professor Rommel Dascil closed the panel by reflecting on the deeper structural issues in Philippine politics. He examined how systemic problems like political dynasties and patronage politics affect voter behavior and erode trust in elections.

The program concluded with a dynamic open forum, allowing students and faculty to raise questions and share reflections on how to shape a more participatory and principled electorate.

CAS Dean Marlina Lino lauded the DSS faculty for organizing a successful event, highlighting the clarity and relevance of their insights. She also reaffirmed the college’s support for Tungtongan as an avenue for public dialogue on Ilokano life and national issues.

The second episode will be uploaded soon to the MMSU page. Tungtongan is conducted in collaboration with Magik FM-Laoag and the Rotary Club of Sunshine Laoag.

Following the success of its pilot run in September 2024 and this latest session, Tungtongan will continue to provide a platform for meaningful and multidisciplinary discourse in the university and beyond.

𝗗𝗦𝗦 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝗴 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗔𝗦 𝗣𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘄 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱

The 𝗠𝗠𝗦𝗨 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 and the 𝗠𝗠𝗦𝗨 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗲, two student organizations under the Department of Social Sciences (DSS) of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), brought home multiple awards during the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗖𝗔𝗦 𝗣𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘄 held at the MMSU Covered Court on May 9, 2025.

The MMSU Women’s Circle, an interest club committed to implementing programs aligned with Gender and Development (GAD), received the 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱. Under the leadership of its president, Ms. Jean Francesca Espiritu, the organization also earned an Exemplary Award for its meaningful initiative, "𝗞𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝗞𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮" held during the 2025 Women's Month Celebration.

Meanwhile, the MMSU Psyche Society, the official academic organization of BS in Psychology students, led by Ms. Ivy Roxas, was recognized as the 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝟯 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 for its consistent excellence in conducting impactful activities both on and off campus.

The organization also garnered an Exemplary Award for its outreach program,“𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝘀𝗮 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗮,” an initiative aimed at providing basic necessities to children supported by Parola Santwaryo Inc.

The MMSU Women’s Circle is advised by Ms. Cyrelle J. Dominico and Ms. Girlie Obrero, while the MMSU Psyche Society is guided by Ms. Janica Mae P. Pillien.

These achievements underscore the Department of Social Sciences’ dedication to student leadership, civic engagement, and excellence in co-curricular development.

And in the face of all these challenges, one vital question remains: Can elections still solve the Philippines’ enduring socio-political problems, or do we need deeper reform to revive the people’s faith in democracy?
