Green Convergence, in partnership with the Visayas State University (VSU), is set to convene the State of Nature Assessment 2025 (Green SONA 2025) on September 3 to 4, 2025, at the RDE Hall of VSU in Baybay, Leyte, with the central theme โEcosystems Integrity: A Must for Philippine Sustainability.โ
This Green SONA 2025, to be held in Region 8, will spotlight discussions on how the locals are preparing for the impacts of climate change and what local environmental issues need closer scrutiny. This is upon observation of the same national problems of flooding, landslides, quarrying, logging, and waste management, also encountered in other areas of the nation.
President of Green Convergence Victoria Segovia said, in line with this and in accordance with tradition, Green Convergence will go to the Visayas this year aroundโto Leyte and the partners in VSU.
โThis is an opportune time to visit the beautiful island of Leyte, and see for ourselves how the people have risen from the devastation brought about by [typhoon] โYolanda.โ We will learn from their resilience, their adaptation and mitigation measuresโand applaud them with all sincerity,โ Segovia said.
Enriching the discussions will be resource speakers from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 8 (DENR-VIII), Department of Science and Technology Region 8 (DOST-VIII), Local Government of Baybay City, Baybay City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), Alpha Distinct Development Solutions Inc. (Alpha DDSI), Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM), and more institutions and organizations concerned with both the regional and national environmental state.
Subsequently, there will be a seminar-workshop on climate change and carbon footprint calculation, through the Ako Ang Bukas (AAB) Advocacy Program, and a tree planting activity on the second day, September 4.
Green Convergence holds the Green SONA to present a review of environmentally important events of the past year in the Philippines. Local or regional issues are discussed and contextualized in the current national situation. It is held annually since 2007โin Dumaguete, Baguio, Puerto Princesa, Bacolod, General Santos, Tarlac, and this year, in Leyte.
It is attended by different sectors across the countryโacademe, business, media, grassroot communities, religious, indigenous peoples (IPs), government, and more that comprise our shared nation.
The Green SONA 2025 is supported by the First Philippine Holdings, Lasallian Institute for the Environment, Forest Foundation Philippines, and Foundation for the Philippine Environment, with Amaranth as media partner.
