Faculty members from the Faculty of Management and Economics (FME) had the opportunity to learn from both formal sessions and informal exchanges on global sustainability during a recent international conference in Thailand. One of the highlights of the trip was meeting Dr. Dindo Campilan, a proud Viscan and the current Regional Director for Asia and Hub Director for Oceania of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the worldโ€™s largest and oldest environmental organization. Representing FME were Dr. Moises Neil Seriรฑo, Dr. Lemuel S. Preciados, and Ms. Gracielle Gamotin.

The conversation followed Dr. Campilanโ€™s insightful session on lifelong learning, where he emphasized the importance of continuously growing as educators and leaders, especially in addressing global challenges. He encouraged a shift in perspective, not just focusing on carbon neutrality and carbon credits, but on becoming nature-positive by restoring ecosystems and valuing the services they provide. It was a proud moment for the FME delegates to engage with a fellow Viscan making an impact on the global stage, and to be reminded of a powerful truth: โ€œWe do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.โ€

Green Convergence, in partnership with the Visayas State University (VSU), is set to convene the State of Nature Assessment 2025 (Green SONA 2025) on September 3 to 4, 2025, at the RDE Hall of VSU in Baybay, Leyte, with the central theme โ€œEcosystems Integrity: A Must for Philippine Sustainability.โ€

This Green SONA 2025, to be held in Region 8, will spotlight discussions on how the locals are preparing for the impacts of climate change and what local environmental issues need closer scrutiny. This is upon observation of the same national problems of flooding, landslides, quarrying, logging, and waste management, also encountered in other areas of the nation.

President of Green Convergence Victoria Segovia said, in line with this and in accordance with tradition, Green Convergence will go to the Visayas this year aroundโ€”to Leyte and the partners in VSU.

โ€œThis is an opportune time to visit the beautiful island of Leyte, and see for ourselves how the people have risen from the devastation brought about by [typhoon] โ€˜Yolanda.โ€™ We will learn from their resilience, their adaptation and mitigation measuresโ€”and applaud them with all sincerity,โ€ Segovia said.

Enriching the discussions will be resource speakers from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 8 (DENR-VIII), Department of Science and Technology Region 8 (DOST-VIII), Local Government of Baybay City, Baybay City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), Alpha Distinct Development Solutions Inc. (Alpha DDSI), Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM), and more institutions and organizations concerned with both the regional and national environmental state.

Subsequently, there will be a seminar-workshop on climate change and carbon footprint calculation, through the Ako Ang Bukas (AAB) Advocacy Program, and a tree planting activity on the second day, September 4.

Green Convergence holds the Green SONA to present a review of environmentally important events of the past year in the Philippines. Local or regional issues are discussed and contextualized in the current national situation. It is held annually since 2007โ€”in Dumaguete, Baguio, Puerto Princesa, Bacolod, General Santos, Tarlac, and this year, in Leyte.

It is attended by different sectors across the countryโ€”academe, business, media, grassroot communities, religious, indigenous peoples (IPs), government, and more that comprise our shared nation.

The Green SONA 2025 is supported by the First Philippine Holdings, Lasallian Institute for the Environment, Forest Foundation Philippines, and Foundation for the Philippine Environment, with Amaranth as media partner.

Held on August 15, the orientation was graced by VP for Student Affairs and Services, Dr. Aleli Villocino, who warmly welcomed the students and reminded them that the university will always be there to guide and support their journey. Afterwards, Dr. Mark Ratilla, Dean of FME, gave an overview of the faculty before the different heads introduced their respective units: Business and Management, Economics, Tourism Management, Hospitality Management, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and the Visayas Socio-Economic Research and Data Analytics Center (ViSERDAC).

The program also featured a discussion on solid waste management policies and practices in VSU, along with an intermission number, an open forum, and the introduction of the FME-SSC officers and their program plan. The orientation welcomed students into the FME community while also highlighting sustainability and the value of active student involvement. ๐ŸŒฑโœจ
