Strengthening Coastal Communities Through University–LGU Partnerships 🌊🌿

We proudly celebrate the ceremonial signing of (4) four Memoranda of Agreement on July 8, 2026, at the PhilRootcrops Training Hall, Visayas State University, with partner LGUs from Inopacan, Hindang, Hilongos, and Bato. This milestone strengthens VSU’s commitment to meaningful university-community partnerships for sustainable development.

Led by Project Leader Dr. Eliza Espinosa and the component leaders from various units, the Integrated Coastal Resource Management (ICRM) Program provides science-based technical assistance to address coastal concerns, restore marine habitats, enhance fisheries, and support fisherfolk livelihoods. Together with local governments and communities, VSU continues to bring science, innovation, and extension services closer to the people, building resilient and sustainable coastal communities.

We are thrilled to highlight another groundbreaking study co-authored by researchers from the UPLB School of Environmental Science and Management (SESAM), published in the international journal Watershed Ecology and the Environment!

Titled 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐠𝐧𝐨 𝐑𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧, 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬, this research provides the very first basin-wide baseline assessment of fish diversity and water quality in one of the country's most vital river systems.

As our freshwater ecosystems face growing pressures from human activities, understanding what lies beneath the water is critical to saving it.

Highlights of the Study:

• Ichthyofaunal structure and hydrochemistry are vital indicators of river basin health.
• The Agno River Basin in the Philippines supports key land uses such as agriculture, mining, and aquaculture.
• A total of 23 fish species were recorded, with Gobiidae and Cichlidae as the dominant families.
• No fish were found downstream of mining activity, indicating severe impairment.
• Temperature, among the environmental factors measured, was associated with fish composition.

Farmers participating in the training “Cultivating Resilient Communities through Regenerative Agriculture and Collective Action” continued their capacity-building on nursery management and agroforestry systems during the second session, aimed at strengthening biodiversity and promoting climate-resilient farming practices.

The session featured 𝗠𝘀. 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗝𝗼𝘆 𝗖. 𝗗𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆, who provided technical inputs on establishing healthy nurseries and integrating trees into farming systems.

She also discussed common native and exotic tree species in the Philippines, emphasizing their importance in agriculture as well as the associated ecological risks, helping participants make more informed and sustainable species selection decisions.
