𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 | 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱-𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘀 ‘𝙋𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙠𝙩𝙤𝙧 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱’

𝗕𝗔𝗬𝗕𝗔𝗬 𝗖𝗜𝗧𝗬, 𝗣𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗣𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗦 – Jay Gabriel Cañada, a second-year BS Biotechnology student, won the '𝘗𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘈𝘬𝘵𝘰𝘳 Award' for his lead role in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘒 at the Puregold CinePanalo 2026 Student Shorts category on September 30, 2026.

Cañada also directed the film and earned a nomination for best screenplay. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘒 follows Kaloy, a boy born with a cleft lip, as he struggles in a world of sound. The protagonist, to Cañada, was a deeply personal character, allowing him to deliver an authentic, award-winning performance.

A product of Visayas State University’s Biotech research! 👏🏻🧬

📢 𝘗𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘉𝘪𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘬 featured technology No. 3: 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗠𝗲𝗴

BioMeg, developed by Dr. Edgardo E. Tulin with support from the DA Biotech Program, is a microbial inoculant for sweet potato (kamote) and purple yam (ube) containing 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘮𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮— a type of bacteria that lives mainly in soil, making fixed micronutrients such as iron, copper, and zinc more available to plants. It is produced using locally available materials such as cassava peel and ipil-ipil leaves as sources of carbon and nitrogen.

A very solemn and special surprise party for the mother and father of Biotechnology at VSU 🤍 We are truly honored to be mentored by these two amazing professors - Dr. Edgardo E. Tulin and Dr. Ma. Theresa P. Loreto, both products of VSU, who through their lives and teachings have inspired a generation of scientists, teachers, and leaders.

Thank you very much for all the faculty and staff of ARIC, Dopac, and Biotech for organizing this surprise party! And to all our alumni and friends for sharing their time, video or in person messages, and resources! What a joy to celebrate our most admired professors and bosses!
