SMU Conducts Tree Inventory and Ecological Assessment of Saint Mary's University
Saint Mary’s University (SMU) – School of Health and Natural Sciences, through the Center for Natural Sciences’ PROJECT SEDES SAPIENTIAE GARDENS, successfully conducted a Tree Inventory and Assessment from March to May 2026 at the university campus. The research-based initiative aligns with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
Led by Mr. Renz Gil B. Medina and Dr. Elsa L. Cajucom, LPT, RChT, the activity involved BS Biology 1 students in identifying, locating, and analyzing campus tree species to support biodiversity modeling and conservation planning. Key processes included ocular inspection, tree-tagging, data collection, statistical analysis, and research defense.
The study produced baseline data on tree abundance, frequency, and endemism, providing inputs for proposed conservation strategies such as a digital tree monitoring system, invasive species regulation, native canopy enrichment, and a campus biodiversity management zone.
Despite challenges in data gathering due to the high number of trees, organizers reported successful completion of objectives. The results are expected to strengthen SMU’s long-term campus greening and biodiversity conservation efforts.
