𝐂𝐀𝐒 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐁𝐮𝐰𝐚𝐧 𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐚, 𝐀𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬

Faculty members, staff, and students of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) joined the university-wide Buwan ng Wika and ASEAN Month activities on August 25, as Nueva Vizcaya State University-Bayombong Campus convened members of the academic community for cultural and learning activities under the theme, "Navigating Our Future, Together."

CAS personnel and students participated in the ASEAN Grand Parade in the morning, followed by the Buwan ng Wika and ASEAN Month seminar-workshop at the Mini-Theater. The celebration also featured student-centered activities, including an ASEAN Quiz Bowl, Pagsulat ng Tula, and a same-day edit video contest.

CAS faculty members took active roles in the seminar-workshop. Dean Dr. Julius S. Valderama delivered the welcome remarks, while Dr. Mildred Calugan led the invocation. Department chairs Dr. Merlie M. Binay-an and Dr. Gydabelle M. Celestino introduced the resource speakers for the two learning sessions.

The seminar-workshop tackled the use of Filipino and artificial intelligence in research and access to information, as well as research ethics and the responsible use of AI. The sessions were led by Mr. Joenel B. Lacaden of the Philippine Science High School-Cagayan Valley Campus and NVSU faculty member Dr. Jason Arnold L. Maslang.

The participation of CAS formed part of the campus-wide celebration, which promoted appreciation of the Filipino language and culture, strengthened awareness of ASEAN identity and cooperation, and encouraged active engagement among academic stakeholders.

This annual celebration is spearheaded by the Culture and the Arts Office in collaboration with various offices and student groups.

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) discussed various college activities during its second regular college meeting on Monday, August 24 at Reading Room 2 of the Library Building.

Among the matters raised at its meeting were staffing requirements, faculty reports, accreditation concerns, and upcoming academic and college activities.

The college took up personnel requirements for several academic units, including requests for additional faculty members and staffing needs for the succeeding semester.

Faculty members were also reminded of required academic and administrative submissions, including reports, instructional documents, performance-related requirements, and other materials for uploading to designated university platforms.

The meeting also reviewed ongoing accreditation work, including compliance requirements and documentary preparations for the college’s academic programs.

CAS likewise discussed its planned activities for the coming months, including faculty development initiatives, research and extension activities, departmental programs, and preparations for the college’s foundation celebration.

Faculty hiring, academic requirements, and preparations for Joint Circular No. 3 (JC3) were among the key matters taken up by the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) during its regular faculty meeting on July 13, ahead of the first semester of Academic Year 2026–2027.

College Dean Dr. Julius S. Valderama presided over the meeting at Balay 2, CAS Faculty Building, together with the college’s department chairs and faculty members.

Among the updates presented during the meeting were the arrival of new faculty members in the Mathematics and Statistics, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Humanities departments.

The staffing concerns formed part of a wider agenda as the college prepared for the opening of classes and the academic and administrative requirements of the new semester.

Faculty members were reminded of reports and documents that need to be prepared or submitted, including grades, accomplishment reports, work-from-home reports, syllabi, test questions, classroom activities, reports related to faculty designations, and Individual Performance Commitment and Review or IPCR documents and summaries.

As preparatory discussions before the start of the semester, the meeting also covered matters concerning PREs, on-the-job training, and laboratory fees.

Another item on the agenda was the college’s preparation for JC3, particularly an orientation series and strategies intended to guide faculty members through the requirements of the revised faculty promotion system.

Other matters on the agenda included planned activities, faculty loading, accreditation, and concerns affecting the college as it entered Academic Year 2026–2027.

Three faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), together with representatives from an Indigenous Peoples (IP) community and the local government of Ambaguio, Nueva Vizcaya, participated in the five-day Summer Seminar in Linguistics (SSL) on Language Documentation held at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman from May 25 to 29, 2026.

Organized by the UP Department of Linguistics under the leadership of Dr. Francisco Rosario Jr., the seminar-workshop aimed to strengthen participants’ knowledge and skills in documenting Philippine languages through scientific research methods and field-based practices.

The training gathered language scholars, researchers, educators, and IP representatives from different parts of the country. Through eight modules delivered through lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities, participants learned key concepts, methods, and workflows used in language documentation and research.

Representing NVSU were Social Sciences and Humanities Department Chairperson Dr. Gydabelle Celestino, Associate Professor Mild Hombrebueno, and Dr. Mildred Calugan. Joining them were IP community officials led by Hon. Trenton Dulnuan and staff from the Local Government Unit of Ambaguio, one of NVSU’s partner extension communities.

The participation was made possible through the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in March 2023 between NVSU and the UP Department of Linguistics, which promotes academic collaboration in language research, education, and community engagement.

The seminar was facilitated by distinguished faculty members of the UP Department of Linguistics, including Assistant Professor Noah Cruz, Instructor John Michael De Pano, Instructor Brian Baran, and Dr. Maria Kristina Gallego. The facilitators shared their expertise in language documentation, fieldwork, and community-based language research.

According to the participants, the seminar provided valuable insights and practical skills that can support future research and extension initiatives involving linguistic and cultural communities in Nueva Vizcaya.

The participation of NVSU faculty members and community representatives reflects the university’s continuing commitment to research, extension, and community engagement. The knowledge gained from the training is expected to contribute to collaborative projects focused on language preservation, cultural heritage, and inclusive community development.

Through the CAS Social Sciences and Humanities Department, NVSU expressed its gratitude to the UP Department of Linguistics for the learning opportunity and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening future academic and extension partnerships that promote cultural preservation and community empowerment.

The faculty members of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) gathered for their monthly meeting on May 8, 2026 at the Library Reading Room on the 2nd Floor of the Library Building to discuss important academic, administrative, and departmental concerns.

Led by the dean, Dr. Julius Valderama, together with department chairpersons, faculty members, and staff, the meeting focused on updates regarding academic programs, faculty concerns, institutional requirements, and upcoming activities of the college.

Among the matters discussed during the college meeting were the proposed transfer of graduate school programs from the College of Teacher Education (CTED) to CAS and updates on new academic programs, including BSDevCom, BASS-IS, BAPOS, and MST and PhD Science Education major in Mathematics. Faculty members were also informed about requests for hiring additional instructors and professors in the fields of Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Mathematics and Statistics.

The meeting also tackled updates related to Certificate of Program Compliance (COPC) preparations, particularly for the BS Mathematics program and graduate programs in Mathematics. Department chair status and other administrative matters were likewise presented.

Faculty members were reminded about several academic and institutional reports that need submission, including grades, accomplishment reports, syllabi, test questions, classroom activities, research and extension outputs, alumni tracer concerns, and work-from-home reports attached to Daily Time Records (DTRs).

Meanwhile, the college highlighted recently conducted activities such as SWAP 5 and 6, the university charter anniversary celebration, the Mathematics and Statistics Capacity Seminar, Biology Week, GE culminating activities, internal audit preparations, and the balancing of General Education subjects.

The SWAP Series, now on its SWAP 7 (Teaching Innovations), was conducted in the afternoon, with ICD college coordinator Dr. Bernadette Bugtong as the main facilitator and Mr. Emmanuel Danguilan, a faculty member of the NVSU - College of Information Technology Education, as the resource speaker. During the mini-workshop to apply the new learning, the faculty members were divided into various groups and worked on their assigned tasks before the presentations.
