Three faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), together with representatives from an Indigenous Peoples (IP) community and the local government of Ambaguio, Nueva Vizcaya, participated in the five-day Summer Seminar in Linguistics (SSL) on Language Documentation held at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman from May 25 to 29, 2026.

Organized by the UP Department of Linguistics under the leadership of Dr. Francisco Rosario Jr., the seminar-workshop aimed to strengthen participantsโ€™ knowledge and skills in documenting Philippine languages through scientific research methods and field-based practices.

The training gathered language scholars, researchers, educators, and IP representatives from different parts of the country. Through eight modules delivered through lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities, participants learned key concepts, methods, and workflows used in language documentation and research.

Representing NVSU were Social Sciences and Humanities Department Chairperson Dr. Gydabelle Celestino, Associate Professor Mild Hombrebueno, and Dr. Mildred Calugan. Joining them were IP community officials led by Hon. Trenton Dulnuan and staff from the Local Government Unit of Ambaguio, one of NVSUโ€™s partner extension communities.

The participation was made possible through the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in March 2023 between NVSU and the UP Department of Linguistics, which promotes academic collaboration in language research, education, and community engagement.

The seminar was facilitated by distinguished faculty members of the UP Department of Linguistics, including Assistant Professor Noah Cruz, Instructor John Michael De Pano, Instructor Brian Baran, and Dr. Maria Kristina Gallego. The facilitators shared their expertise in language documentation, fieldwork, and community-based language research.

According to the participants, the seminar provided valuable insights and practical skills that can support future research and extension initiatives involving linguistic and cultural communities in Nueva Vizcaya.

The participation of NVSU faculty members and community representatives reflects the universityโ€™s continuing commitment to research, extension, and community engagement. The knowledge gained from the training is expected to contribute to collaborative projects focused on language preservation, cultural heritage, and inclusive community development.

Through the CAS Social Sciences and Humanities Department, NVSU expressed its gratitude to the UP Department of Linguistics for the learning opportunity and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening future academic and extension partnerships that promote cultural preservation and community empowerment.

Congratulations, NVSU!

01/05/2026

To the hands that sustain the university, Happy Labor Day.

Today, we recognize the men and women of NVSUโ€”both teaching and non-teaching personnelโ€”whose daily work keeps the University moving forward.

The faculty who shape minds, challenge perspectives, and guide students toward their future.

The administrative staff, clerks, librarians, technicians, security personnel, utility workers, and all support staff who ensure that every process runs smoothly behind the scenes.

Your work may not always be visible, but it is deeply felt in every classroom discussion, every completed document, every safe campus, and every student success story.

This Labor Day, we honor not only your service but also your dedication, patience, and quiet commitment to excellence.

A university is only as strong as the people who sustain it.

Mabuhay ang manggagawang Pilipino!

The Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), through its Department of Mathematics and Statistics under the College of Arts and Sciences, in partnership with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of the Philippines Baguio (UP Baguio), conducted a three-day Capacity-Building Program in Applied and Investigative Mathematics for Research, Innovation, and STEM Education from April 23 to 25, 2026 at the DISADECO Hotel, Resort and Events.

The program, anchored on the theme โ€œAdvancing Statistical Analysis, Mathematical Modeling, and Discrete Mathematics Investigation for Educators and Learners,โ€ was made possible through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between NVSU and UP Baguio, which solidifies the institutional collaboration on mathematics education and research competencies.

The program opened with a welcome and inspirational message from university officials, including Dr. Julius S. Valderama, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Director of the Mathematical Modeling and Statistics Center, and Dr. Arvin P. Vallesteros, Campus Administrator of NVSU-Bayombong. Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Karen T. Dizon-Taclay, Director General of the program, presented the objectives and introduced the participants.

The first day highlighted a lecture-workshop led by Prof. Rizavel C. Addawe, which focused on the roles of statistics in research, descriptive statistics, data visualization, and the use of statistical software. The afternoon session explored time series data, forecasting techniques, overfitting, and model validation, culminating in the presentation of outputs.

On the second day, participants engaged in sessions on mathematical modeling, including ecological and epidemiological models, stability analysis, and phase plane plotting. Demonstrations using digital tools such as Shiny applications in R were also conducted to support interactive data analysis and interpretation.

The final day centered on discrete mathematics, with discussions on graph theory, networks, algorithms, number theory, and modular arithmetic. The sessions were facilitated by UP Baguio faculty members, including Asst. Prof. Rostum Paolo B. Alanas, Asst. Prof. Aprimelle Kris J. Pajimola, Asst. Prof. Saraleen Mae M. Manongsong, and Asst. Prof. Renz Jimwel S. Mina.

The program concluded with the presentation of outputs, an open forum, and a closing ceremony that included the awarding of certificates and closing remarks from Dr. Andrei A. Domogo, Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of UP Baguio.

Organizers noted that the initiative aimed to enhance participantsโ€™ competencies in statistical analysis, mathematical modeling, and discrete mathematics, while advancing collaboration among educators and advancing research-driven STEM instruction.

To enhance studentsโ€™ understanding of biological sciences by linking classroom knowledge with real-world applications and interdisciplinary learning experiences, 112 students, 8 faculty members, and 3 guides from the Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) successfully completed a four-day Biology Tour, which allowed them to visit key scientific and educational institutions in Laguna and Metro Manila, from April 6 to 9, 2026.

The participants, including second-year Bachelor of Science (BS) biology students, third-year BS in Education-Science students, and a Master of Science in Education student, took part in the activity to gain hands-on learning experiences and industry exposure aligned with their academic programs.

On April 7, the group traveled to Laguna, where they visited the Rizal Shrine in Laguna and the Makiling Botanic Garden. They also engaged with the University of the Philippines Los Baรฑos (UPLB) Technology Transfer and Business Development Office and the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD).

The following day, April 8, the tour continued in Metro Manila with visits to Yakult Philippines, Inc. and Gardenia Bakeries Philippines, Inc., providing students with insights into industrial processes and applied science. The group also explored the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Museum and the National Museum of Natural History.

The said tour was proposed and implemented by the faculty members of the Department of Natural Sciences under the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).
