Under the banner of 2026: Empowered Women Empower Women, the SMU Student Central Council, in partnership with the Marian Forensic Science Organization (MFSO), SMU Student Affairs and Services, and the Marian Alumni Batch '74, gathered students and faculty to celebrate National Womenโs Month through education and empowerment.
The highlight of the afternoonโs educational session was an in-depth discussion on the "Sexual Harassment and Safe Spaces Act" (Republic Act No. 11313). The session provided a comprehensive look at how legal frameworks protect individuals, particularly women, from harassment in various settings.
๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ด. ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ก. ๐ก๐ฎ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ผ ๐ฅ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐บ led the charge, breaking down the complexities of the law to ensure participants walked away with a functional understanding of their rights. The discussion emphasized that safety is not a privilege, but a fundamental right in Public Spaces, Workplaces, Educational Institutions, and even at oneโs own home.
Beyond the legalities, the event transitioned into a celebration of leadership and resilience. The Talk featured ๐ ๐ฟ๐. ๐๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ถ ๐ ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฑ๐ผ๐๐ฎ, ๐๐ฃ๐ whose journey of integrity and service served as a beacon for the Marian community.

These are Mrs. Heidi Mendoza's words about her mother, expressing her gratitude in playing a crucial role in shaping her as she grew up. She shared her story which highlights the strength, sacrifice, and resilience of a mother who worked hard, instilled important values in their children who were able to pursue education, opportunities, and leadership roles that were previously unavailable.
Continuing her narrative, she talked about her journey as a public servant. Beginning in the lowest position of the career ladder and then working her way up through dedication to truth and accountability. Later, she rose to become the Undersecretary of the United Nations Office of Internal Oversight Services, and at the time had the highest position ever held by a Filipina in that office.
Her story serves as both a reminder and an inspiration, showing that the achievements of educated, honest, and principled women today are built upon the sacrifices of earlier generations. Many women before now endured hardship and lived with limited opportunities, yet their strength and resilience opened doors for those who now have the chance to learn, lead, and serve with integrity.
Her talk empowered students, both young men and women, to embrace the values of service, integrity, and courage. Through her inspiring story, she encouraged them to always strive for the truth, stand firm in their principles, and recognize the vital role the youth play in shaping communities and public service.
Mrs. Mendoza's closing words are a reminder, to always make sure your heart is in the right place.
