𝗨𝗥𝗖 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 (𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲)

Saint Mary’s University continue to strengthen its capabilities in the field of research as the University Research Center held another undertaking to continuously promote and manifest excellence. On October 7, 2026, URC staff conducted and facilitated Presentation of Finished Research (Project Inspire) at room AP 202 (Computer Laboratory).

The activity started with a meaningful prayer and opening remarks by Dr. Monaloufel Rosario F. Jasmin, SAB Research Coordinator formally opened the day’s undertaking.

The ten minute presentation on “Burnout and Coping Strategies Among Math Teachers in Nueva Vizcaya: Basis for an Assistive Plan” was done by Mr. Domingo Guntalilib. The research study discusses about the significance of giving attention to the teachers well being and the factors contributing to the burnout of teachers specifically focusing to the Secondary Math Teachers in Nueva Vizcaya. These factors include high volume of workload, time constraints, needs shifting and recruit demands among others. The study used a quantitative and qualitative approach and questionnaire content was carefully validated by guidance counsellors.

The findings of the study shows that burnout is generally low which means that math teachers show low overall burnout and remain engaged, though lingering fatigue and emotional exhaustion underscore the need for regular wellness initiatives and support of the institutions. For adaptive coping, teachers primarily rely on proactive coping strategies such as problem solving, strategic planning and positive reframing which should be reinforced through peer support and favorable working conditions. In response to these findings, the MATHWELL plan was created to support teachers across five key domains: Meaningful Teaching, Accessible Resources, Workload Management, Holistic Wellness and Collegial Support. In conclusion, the study’s goal is not only to respond to burnout but to prevent it. Finally, a time was allotted for the Q and A.

After the Q and A portion, Dr. Melanie G. Sarmiento, Director of the University Research Center made a proposal that the Research Council will serve as co-authors for papers not finished after the day of the training. Researchers will still submit the papers and the research coordinators will have a division of labor for the other steps to complete the paper until publication but only if the researchers will consent.

Another highlight of the day’s activity was a short talk delivered by Ms. Geraldine Yuzon, SHNS Research Coordinator about Research and Publication where an article will be critique and commented supported by references which may be done in a week or so.

A closing remark finally wrapped up the very informative activity.

Saint Mary's University- Nursing Department was invited to attend the Regular Session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Nueva Vizcaya last October 5, 2026.

The invitation to SMU was to receive a Certificate of Commendation with resolution No. 2026-6693 commending Saint Mary's University for its consistent 100% passing rate in the Philippine Nurse Licensure Examination and its invaluable contribution to raising health professionals in the province of Nueva Vizcaya.

The award was received by D. Moises Alexander T. Asuncion, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, together with Dr. Sherylou A. Benig, Department Head- Nursing Program and Mrs. Leycel F. Marzan, Clinical Coordinator. This milestone is a testimony that SMU is producing an excellent and highly competent Nursing Education in the Province.

𝗜𝗣-𝟰𝗣𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗛-𝗔𝗚𝗧𝗨𝗧𝗨𝗕𝗢

In celebration of Indigenous Peoples and Museum Month, Saint Mary’s University (SMU) conducted Project TECH-AGTUTUBO, a Community-Based Training (CBT) program, last October 3, 2026. Spearheaded by the Equivalency and Technical-Vocational Assessment Office (ETVAO) the initiative was organized in close partnership with the Community Engagement and Indigenous Peoples Studies Center (CEIPSC), the Center for Information and Communications Technology (CICT), the Computer and Electronics Technical Service Office (CETSO), and volunteer non-academic personnel and student.

Now on its second year, Project TECH-AGTUTUBO provides hands-on Computer Systems Servicing (CSS) NC II training to Indigenous Peoples (IP) and Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) participants from across Nueva Vizcaya. Designed to foster inclusive growth, the program aims to deliver accessible technical education and practical digital skills to local communities.

The morning session opened at the GdB Hotel Functional Hall, where non-academic office personnel and student volunteers assisted in managing and coordinating. Mrs. Gayle R. Mercado, Head of ETVAO, reinforced the university's mission to empower local communities through accessible technical education and social inclusion. She then shared key training modules and expected impact of the initiative on the participants. CICT Director, Mrs. Essel T. Cañaberal highlighted the critical role of digital literacy and technical capability in today's digital landscape emphasizing the collaborative commitment of CICT in bridging the digital divide for local communities. Mr. Samuel B. Damayon, Vice President for Administration, spoke on institutional stewardship and community development before officially declaring the training open.

Representatives from government partner agencies also delivered messages of support. Mrs. Eva T. Doniego, Supervising TESD Specialist, conveyed TESDA’s message of support and program guidance, while Mrs. Ma. Belen O. Foryasen, SWO III / Provincial Link for Nueva Vizcaya, relayed DSWD’s commitment to supporting IP and 4Ps through inclusive community development.

The activities transitioned into technical training sessions at Apo Pilo Building. led by CBT trainers Mr. Dennis Aboseijo and Mr. Erald John A. Aguilar, covering component identification, pre-assembly planning, and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) protocols. Practical exercises were led by CBT trainer Mr. Chester Duane M. Palacay and staff from CICT and CETSO. The trainees physically assembled computer hardware, prepared bootable installation media, installed operating systems and drivers, configured application software, and performed comprehensive system testing. In the afternoon, CBT trainer Mr. Emerson Rabago assisted by Mr. Clark Kenneth C. Cabico led a practical module on printer repair titled "Printer Rescue," which was followed by an awareness talk on electronic waste management by CETSO Head Mr. Mildios V. Blando.

Through these joint efforts, the collaboration from SMU, TESDA, and DSWD continue to champion sustainable development and inclusive community growth.

BAYOMBONG, NUEVA VIZCAYA — Saint Mary’s University (SMU) continues to uphold its distinguished Marian brand of Academic and Leadership Excellence as three of its outstanding graduates have officially been named Regional Finalists in the prestigious Search for the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) – Region 02.

Embodying the Marian core values of Excellence, Communion, Innovation, and Social Responsibility, the three regional finalists have demonstrated exceptional achievements in academics, leadership, and service to the community throughout their university journey.

The three Marian achievers, who were also recognized for their exemplary accomplishments during the University’s Commencement Exercises on July 3, 2026, are:
- Edgar D. Balaba Jr., a graduate of Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and recipient of the Rev. John Van Bauwel, CICM Leadership Award
- Mary Jemille O. Culanag, a graduate of Bachelor of Secondary Education, major in English, with a Certificate in Religious Education, who graduated Magna Cum Laude
- Almyra Joy B. Garcia, a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management, who earned the academic distinction of Cum Laude

As part of the regional selection process, the three finalists will participate in the TOSP Region 02 Formation Program on October 16–17, 2026, in Ilagan City, Isabela, culminating in the much-anticipated Regional Awarding Ceremony on October 18, 2026. The regional awardees will subsequently advance to the national search, where they will join other outstanding student leaders from across the country.

The Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) is a prestigious national recognition program that honors graduating college students who exemplify academic excellence, outstanding leadership, social responsibility, and meaningful contributions to their communities. Beyond academic achievements, the program recognizes young individuals who demonstrate a strong commitment to nation-building and transformative leadership.

This remarkable achievement further affirms Saint Mary’s University’s unwavering commitment to nurturing graduates who are not only academically competent but also socially responsible, service-oriented, and empowered to become catalysts for positive change.

Saint Mary’s University (SMU), in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry – Nueva Vizcaya (DTI-Nueva Vizcaya), hosted HABI-TAT: Artisan Trade Fair on October 8–9, 2026. Organized by the School of Accountancy and Business (SAB) alongside the Community Engagement and Indigenous Peoples Studies Center (CEIPSC), the two-day event celebrated Indigenous Peoples and Museum Month under the theme “Honoring Indigenous Lifeways: Safeguarding Life and Well-being.”

Uplifting Local MSMEs
The trade fair provided local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs)—including Indigenous-owned businesses and community artisans—a direct market within the campus. The initiative showcased homegrown provincial brands while offering SMU business students a firsthand look at responsible, culturally respectful entrepreneurship in action.

Hands-On Beading Workshop
On October 8, Humanities students attended a Beading Handicrafts Workshop led by Ms. Myrna Aban, Ms. Caroline Aban Fereraz, and Ms. Febelyn Dugay Aban of Aban Handicrafts (Bagabag, Nueva Vizcaya). Guided by the artisans, participants crafted their own beaded pieces, learned pattern selection, and discussed how traditional craft supports local family livelihoods.

Marians Try Their Hand at the Loom
The following day, Ms. Ferlita Erasquin and Ms. Celia Erasquin of Runruno Retro Loom Weaving Services conducted a live weaving demonstration. Students and faculty stepped up to the loom to weave threads under expert guidance, gaining a hands-on appreciation for the skill, rhythm, and cultural heritage behind traditional loom weaving.

Bridging Heritage and Enterprise
Coordinated by Ms. Mikaela Arantxa R. Nuestro and Mrs. Claire L. Guinomon, HABI-TAT successfully united academia, government, and local artisans. By pairing a commercial trade fair with interactive cultural workshops, SMU reaffirmed its commitment to experiential learning, community engagement, and sustainable enterprise.

Saint Mary’s University (SMU) conducted a Security Threat and Violent Incident Preparedness Orientation on September 23, 2026, at the Sacred Heart Center, Saint Mary’s University. The activity was organized by the school administrators, led by Mr. Samuel B. Damayon, JD, VP for Administration, Mrs. Pearl Via S. Coballes, Director, HRDO, and Mr. Hansen T. Villanueva, Head, SPCO.

The said activity was attended by the faculty and staff members of the SMU-Senior High School and Junior High School led by Mr. Melencio G. Bernardino, Jr., Principal of SMU-SHS; Dr. Zaida S. Asunsion, Principal of SMU JHS; and Dr. Henry F. Gamboa, ADSAS for Men. The orientation aimed to strengthen the participants’ awareness, knowledge, and preparedness in responding effectively to security threats and violent incidents within the campus, thereby promoting a safer and more secure environment for the entire Marian community.

The orientation covered essential topics on emergency response and security management, including the Incident Command System (ICS), human-induced critical incidents, and the escalation protocols for such incidents. The participants were also oriented on the roles and responsibilities of first responders, the Incident Commander (IC), and the Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT) during hostage situations.

Other important discussions focused on appropriate responses to bomb threats, suspected and confirmed explosives or improvised explosive devices (IEDs), bomb explosions, and shooting incidents, including active shooter situations. The Philippine National Police (PNP) Project ABKD, or Awareness of Bombs that Kill Lives and Destroy Properties, was also presented to increase awareness of the dangers associated with explosives and the importance of proper reporting and response procedures.

The activity was facilitated by PSSGT Jennifer P. Dulnuan, Bayombong Municipal Police Station (MPS) PCR-PNCO, who discussed security threats and violent incident preparedness. Meanwhile, PEMS Marlon A. Tumanut of the Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Explosives Ordnance Disposal and Canine Unit (NV-PECU) discussed PNP Project ABKD, emphasizing awareness and preparedness in dealing with bomb threats and explosives-related incidents.

Through this initiative, SMU reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its students, faculty, staff, and to the entire Marian community. The activity emphasized the importance of preparedness, effective coordination, and adherence to established emergency response protocols to minimize casualties, maintain order, and promote a safe and secure learning environment for all.
