Two dates. One Lasallian spirit.

April 7 and May 15 both hold deep meaning in the Lasallian tradition and remind us that the legacy of St. John Baptist de La Salle continues to live on in the mission of Christian education.

Originally, the feast of St. La Salle was celebrated on May 15, a date formally established by the Holy See. Through the Pontifical Decree of February 26, 1901, the proper Office and Mass for his feast were approved for the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The significance of May 15 was further strengthened when Pope Pius XII proclaimed St. La Salle as Patron of Christian Teachers on May 15, 1950.

Following the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, the universal Church transferred his feast to April 7, the day of his transitus, his passing into eternal life in 1719. Since then, April 7 has been recognized as the canonical feast day of St. John Baptist de La Salle.

However, because April 7 frequently falls within Holy Week or the Easter Octave, periods during which other liturgical celebrations take precedence, the Lasallian Family continues to commemorate May 15 as the institutional feast of St. La Salle.

Thus:
• April 7 — Canonical Feast
• May 15 — Institutional Feast

Two dates, not in competition, but in complement — both proclaiming the enduring relevance of the patron saint of teachers and all who are committed to the human and Christian education of the young, especially the poor.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, Patron of Teachers, pray for us!
