LOOK | A Day with Philippine Flora! ๐ŸŒฟ
The North Eastern Mindanao State University Bislig Campus, represented by Forester Charry Mae Numeron & Forester Jun Mark M. Tomas together with the students, explored the rich and diverse plant life of Sitio Sote, Brgy. Burbuanan, Bislig City.

They were joined by distinguished mentors and experts: Dr. Pieter Pelser & Dr. Julie Barcelona from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, CENRO Bislig Forester Romel Arbolonio, and Sir Guiller Opiso from the Philippine Eagle Foundation.

The activity provided hands-on experience in plant identification, ecological interactions, and conservation practicesโ€”truly a day full of learning, discovery, and appreciation for our countryโ€™s unique biodiversity! ๐Ÿƒ

LOOK | The BS Forestry students of North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) actively participated in the Lecture on Botany and the Coโ€™s Digital Flora of the Philippines (CDFP) as part of their academic enrichment.

Guided by the expertise of Dr. Pelser and Dr. Barcelona, who shared their knowledge all the way from New Zealand, the students gained valuable insights into herbaria and modern digital approaches in studying and documenting Philippine flora. The activity also featured an engaging open forum, where students had the opportunity to ask questions, share ideas, and deepen their understanding of plant science and conservation in the digital age. ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฟโœจ

Supported by CENROโ€“LGU led by Forester Floilan F. Arcitas, together with three Bantay Dagat personnel, the group established 10 ร— 10 m plots with four replicates per zone across seaward, middle, and landward areas.

Measurements of tree diameter and height were taken, alongside species identification of mangrove stands, to estimate the above-ground blue carbon stock. Prior to this activity, the students conducted a survey in nearby communities to gather data on their awareness of mangrove conservation and their willingness to support related initiatives.

This field activity highlights the Departmentโ€™s continuing commitment to research-based learning, community collaboration, and science-informed mangrove management.

๐ŸŒฒโœจ Empowering Future Foresters Through Drone Technology! โœจ๐ŸŒฒ

The field of forestry continues to evolveโ€”and so do we. To strengthen modern approaches in forest monitoring, planning, and conservation, a Training Workshop on Basic Flight Planning and Aerial Photogrammetry using Drone Technology was successfully conducted last November 27โ€“28, 2025 at the 3rd Floor Admin Building, NEMSU Bislig Campus.

Through this activity, participants explored how drones and aerial photogrammetry can transform traditional forest surveys by providing real-time, accurate, and high-resolution spatial data. From mapping forest landscapes to supporting reforestation planning, wildfire monitoring, and biodiversity assessment, drone technology is now an essential tool in sustainable forest management.

Facilitated by For. Genevieve A. Vergara and For. Chille T. Usa, and welcomed by Campus Director Whelson C. Pasos, the workshop equipped all 2nd year Forestry students with hands-on knowledge in flight planning, data acquisition, image processing, and the interpretation of photogrammetric outputs.

A special appreciation to our resource speaker, Mr. Michael Jeremiah R. Mativo, GIS Specialist/Remote Sensing Technologist of DENR-Caraga, for sharing his expertise and inspiring future foresters to embrace innovation and digital tools in the field.

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“ Together, we move toward science-based, technology-driven, and sustainable forest management.

AI-Assisted Resort Designing โ€“ using AI tools to generate eco-friendly and functional resort layout concepts.

Data Interpretation Session โ€“ analyzing site data to guide decisions and support sustainable planning.

Afterwards, students had their get together and other fun activities.

These activities reinforced the importance of using science, technology, and data to protect natural areas while allowing tourism to grow responsibly. The experience highlighted that sustainable development is achievable when environmental limits are respected and decisions are grounded in evidence.
