A faculty member of the Department of Languages successfully defends dissertation proposal

The Department of Languages is thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievement of Asst. Prof. Jo-an Salaveria Olaer, faculty member of the Department of Languages, who has successfully defended her dissertation proposal as a PhD candidate at UP Diliman! Her approved dissertation, titled “A Grammar of Pallun Mapun,” marks a significant milestone in her academic journey in the field of linguistics.

The Department is proud to have Asst. Prof. Olaer as a member of the Department of Languages and to see her efforts supported by the full MSU TCTO APDP Grant.

Here’s to creating opportunities and transforming lives through language and education! Congratulations once again, Ma’am Jo-an!

Alhamdulillah! Another soon-to-be PhD Dolphin. 🎓

I wish to congratulate Asst. Prof. Jo-an Salaveria Olaer (PhD candidate, UP Diliman) for the successful defense of her dissertation proposal. Her approved dissertation title is “A Grammar of Pallun Mapun.”

As a student linguist, Ma’am Jo-an is excited to dive into the world of Sinama languages, specifically Pallun Mapun, spoken in Tawi-Tawi province of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). These languages are classified as geographically displaced languages (GDLs) due to their exclusion from the Philippine language family, and their classification within the Austronesian family is still being studied.

Her research aims to create a grammar of Pallun Mapun using Dixon’s Basic Linguistic Theory. The goal is to provide a valuable resource for language learners and enthusiasts, linguists and researchers, Pallun Mapun speakers and community, local governments and policymakers, and cultural institutions.

By documenting Pallun Mapun, we can preserve intangible cultural heritage, supports community identity and self-expression, and contribute to the scarcity of linguistic resources on Sinama languages.

Asst. Prof. Olaer is a faculty member of the Department of Languages who is pursuing PhD in Linguistics at the University of the Philippines in Diliman under a full MSU TCTO APDP Grant.

Three faculty members of the Department of Languages and the Department of Literary and Cultural Studies publish short stories in notable anthology

Faculty members of the Department of Languages and the Department of Literary and Cultural Studies (DELCS) have made contributions to the literary world with their short stories featured in PANUMTUMAN: Anthology of 21st Century Bangsamoro Literature, a book published by the University of Southeastern Philippines' Institute of Languages and Creative Arts. This collection highlights the diverse voices of various authors from BARMM.

Asst. Prof. Nelson S. Dino, chairperson of DELCS, captures the emotional journey of an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) in his poignant story, "She's Silent Now," which explores the bittersweet bond between an OFW and her elderly mother in Sulu. Along this, his essay, titled "My Father Didn't Tell Me My Roots," also enriches the collection. Likewise, Asst. Prof. Nurbarain S. Laja emblazes the anthology with her "The Other House," a profound examination of womanhood and the intricacies of human relationships. Additionally, Mrs. Mirra-Edora A. Esmael’s compelling story, "Rumi and Her Silences," vividly depicts life in Tawi-Tawi through the innocent eyes of a young girl.

This anthology not only showcases the talent of the writers but also enhances the literary landscape of the Bangsamoro region, celebrating its rich cultural heritage and storytelling traditions.
