Eastern Samar State University Borongan Campusโ€™ 63rd Commencement panned out to be a grand event and such a momentous exercise for all involved who filled the University Grandstand on Friday, 15th of May 2026. The well prepared and spacious venue was utilized for the said event for the very first time, and to great success.

The panoramic grandstand served as a fitting backdrop for the most awaited day for the Graduating Class of 2026. Along with their parents, the graduates marched into the venue unmindful of the heat of high noon, grateful that they are finally at the conclusion of their college journey.

Bearing the theme, โ€œResilience in Conflict and Adversity: Upholding Excellence, Accountability and Service in Pursuit of Shared Aspirationsโ€, this academic yearโ€™s finale could not be more befitting of the crossroads that the world and the country face at the moment.

Nevertheless, ESSU and its graduates have been extremely fortunate to be in the midst of the highly respected servant of the people and the admirable presence of none other than Senator Paolo Benigno โ€˜Bamโ€™ A. Aquino IV as its Commencement Speaker. For this occasion, Aquino sets foot on Eastern Samar for only the second time, now as its number one senator following the May 2025 national elections.

Eloquently spoken, the venerable senatorโ€™s message was one of urging the graduates to be instrumental in driving national reform, reiteration of promise on track for delivery, and a commitment to help bring jobs to the province. In his words, โ€œSa mga minamahal kong graduates... โ€

He also added, โ€œHindi sapat na tapusin lang iyong mali. โ€

Also present to show their full support for Class of 2026 were CHED Commissioner and ESSU BOR Chairman, Dr. Desiderio R. Apag III; Eastern Samar Lone District Representative, Hon. Christopher Sheen P. Gonzales; 4Ps Party List Representative and Minority Leader, Hon. Marcelino C. Libanan; Eastern Samar Governor, Hon. Ralph Vincent M. Evardone; CHEDRO8 Director, Dr. Maximo C. Aljibe; Borongan City Mayor, Hon. Jose Ivan Dayan C. Agda; and Borongan City Vice Mayor, Hon. Emmanuel T. Tiu Songco.

The eventful affair closed in a dramatic and exciting finale for everyone present, especially the graduates with their scintillating chorus and choreography of their graduation song, Liwanag Sa Dilim by OPM Rock royalty, Rivermaya. The venue glittered with handheld LED torches from their mobile devices as the song echoed while they swayed in unison to put an exclamation mark to their ESSU journey.

School Heads and Teachers from the Northern Districts of the DepEd Eastern Samar Division relished their turn at the three-day Capability-Building Training Workshop on Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Educational Research from May 6-8, 2026 at the Teatro Ibabawnon of the Main Campus. The activity is a joint venture of DepEd Eastern Samar Division and ESSU Graduate School.

Ensuring that the partnership between the said institutions through the same exercise continue, their respective leadership officially renewed their commitment on day one of the activities, with a MOA signing at the Faculty Lounge to seal their continued collaboration for another three years.

Signing the new agreement were none other than University President, Dr. Andres C. Pagatpatan, Jr. for ESSU. On behalf of DepEd Eastern Samar Division, putting pen to paper was Dr. Raymund D. Capacite, OIC-Assistant Schools Division Superintendent and Dr. Marixel C. Evardone, Chief Education Program Supervisor of the School Governance Operations Division (SGOD).

ESSUโ€™s pool of research and extension professionals on deck for the seminar was bannered by the mastermind of the said TUL-ID (Technical Upskilling via Ladderized, Intensive, and Multi-tiered Dynamic Approach to Research Capacity Building) program, Dr. Riomar A. Obliopas who is also a core faculty member of the Graduate School and currently serves as the Assistant Director of the Research and Development Services Offices (RDSO).

The lineup of expert resource persons for the entire workshop included Dr. Aris A. Lapada, ESSU VP for Research, Innovation and Extension; Dr. Virgilio Rapada, ESSU Extension Coordinator of the Graduate School; Mr. Hilario Domingo L. Chicano, Linkaging and Fund Sourcing Head of ESSUโ€™s Training and Extension Services Office (TESO); Mr. Lourence Villaluz, ESSU Main BSEMC Program Head; and DepEd Eastern Samar Senior Education Program Specialist for Human Resource Development (SEPS-HRD), Dr. Venus Y. Cuesta.

Identical to the workshop provided to DepEd Southern Districts last November, this collaboration is founded on the Basic Education Governance Act of 2001 and the 2016 Basic Education Research Agenda which mandates teachers to engage in scholarly work, publish findings, and most importantly, apply research for decision-making and program development in the basic education level. Furthermore, DepEd Order 19, 2022 emphasizes research and innovation as crucial markers for career advancement of teachers and school heads.

The entire ESSU community is high on pride at the moment as the College of Education (COED) enlisted a whopping 358 new Licensed Professional Teachers and five (5) national topnotchers, following the March 2026 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) results posted by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) yesterday, May 12, 2026.

In what PRC declares as a historic LET result for the Secondary Level which earned the highest national passing rate in history, 224 New Licensed Secondary Teachers (70.66% Institutional Passing) and 134 New Licensed Elementary Teachers (60.36% Institutional Passing) emerged from the five campuses of the entire ESSU System.

Probably more historic for ESSU are two reasons. The said result is the most topnotchers (5) delivered by the University in one licensure exam and the fact that it also delivered the highest ever topnotcher ranking (Top 5) in LET by ESSU, courtesy of Ms. Mariane Lochim of Borongan Campus, with a 93.80% rating in the Elementary Level.

The other topnotchers are Mr. Jommy Mark S. Obina of Maydolong Campus, Top 7 (Elementary) with a 93.40% rating; Ms. Carmina S. Villaruel of Salcedo Campus, Top 7 (Secondary) with a 93.80% rating; Mr. Ian N. Cabria of ESSU Guiuan, Top 9 (Secondary) with a 93.40% rating; and Mr. Michael L. Ida of Salcedo Campus, Top 9 (Secondary) with a 93.40% rating.

University President, Dr. Andres C. Pagatpatan, Jr. beams with pride as he pronounces his congratulations and gratitude for our new professionals, on behalf of the entire ESSU Community. Not only have you all brought us pride by this achievement, you have raised the prestige of our beloved institution a notch higher as well.
