The term โjack of all tradesโ describes a person capable of excelling in different fields rather than one aloneโwhether in academics, leadership, service, or creativity. Among the thousands of Urians who walked the halls of Father Saturnino Urios University (FSUU), Harrison Richard M. Deutch stands as a testament to this description.
A Batch 2026 Valedictorian and Summa Cum Laude graduate of the Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English under the Teacher Education Program (TEP), Harrison spent his four years in the University actively serving in numerous organizations. He became part of The Urian Publication as the former Head Photojournalist (A.Y. 2023โ2024), Associate Editor (A.Y. 2024โ2025), and Broadcast Head (A.Y. 2025โ2026). He also served as President of the Urian Debate Society from A.Y. 2023โ2025 before becoming its Vice President in A.Y. 2025โ2026. Beyond these, he held positions in The Urian Arena Vanguards and the FSUU English Society while also taking leadership roles in debate organizations outside the University.
Aside from being a multifaceted student leader, Harrison was also a consistent Deanโs Lister and recipient of the Butuanon Youth Achiever Award during the Butuanon Choice Awards 2024.
However, before he became adorned with medals, distinctions, and leadership titles, Harrison was once an introverted student hesitant to speak up. During his Senior High School years at Timber City Academy, he struggled with confidence and found it difficult to express his opinions. Encouraged by his teachers and friends, he eventually entered the world of debate. He recalled how debate speeches were supposed to last seven minutes, yet during his first attempts, he could barely speak for thirty seconds. Over time, debate transformed him into someone more confident and expressiveโso much so that seven minutes eventually no longer felt enough for him to share his thoughts.
His journey toward becoming an educator was not straightforward either. Before enrolling at FSUU, Harrison initially took up Computer Engineering in another school during the pandemic. However, he later lost his passion for the program and decided to take a gap year. During that uncertain period in his life, he reflected deeply on the path he truly wanted to pursue. One of the people who greatly influenced his decision was Kim Christian T. Matildo, an alumnus of the Teacher Education Program and now the principal of Timber City Academy. Through his encouragement, Harrison found the courage to pursue education and eventually discovered his passion for teaching and communication.
Like many leadership stories, Harrisonโs journey into leadership began unexpectedly. Entering college, he never imagined himself taking on major organizational responsibilities. However, through the encouragement of people around himโparticularly former Urian Publication Editor-in-Chief, Kyle Ong Yiu, he gradually stepped into leadership roles. Driven by the willingness to challenge himself, Harrison accepted responsibilities even when he doubted his own capabilities. By his second year in college, he was already serving as President of the Urian Debate Society while simultaneously holding positions in other organizations.
Balancing academics, leadership and extracurricular commitments became few of the biggest challenges of his college life. As a member of The Urian Publication, he often had to write articles, cover events and take photographs simultaneously. Through these experiences, he learned how to multitask effectively while remaining attentive and engaged during activities. At the same time, he realized the importance of setting boundaries and making sacrifices, especially during his fourth year and internship, when he needed to lessen some of his responsibilities.
For Harrison, leadership is rooted in inclusivity and collaboration. He described his leadership style as democratic, believing that every memberโregardless of positionโdeserves to be heard and valued during decision-making processes. Through this approach, he fostered stronger teamwork within the organizations he handled and inspired others to become more confident in their own abilities.
Despite being a delayed graduate compared to some of his Senior High School batchmates, Harrison turned his experiences into motivation not only for himself but also for the people around him. As someone pursuing the teaching profession, he believes that educators are called to become role models who inspire others through both achievements and struggles. Among the many projects he became part of, one of the most memorable for him was the Butuan Intervarsity (BIV), a nationwide debate tournament hosted in FSUU that gathered participants from different parts of the country. Beyond promoting debate and academic excellence, the event also became a platform for community service, as its excess funds were allocated to causes such as animal welfare initiatives and feeding programs.
Looking back on his years in Urios, Harrison considers his willingness to say โyesโ to unfamiliar opportunities as one of the defining factors of his growth. Whether serving as a debate leader, publication staff member, or photojournalist despite having little prior experience, he embraced risks and challenges that eventually molded him into a more flexible, resilient, and well-rounded individual.

Finally, he also shared his plan after college, in which he plans to teach in Timber City Academy, one of his alma mater, as a way of giving back to the community that molded him to the person that he is now, and he is also preparing for reviewing for the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET). At Father Saturnino Urios University (FSUU), versatility is reflected not as a skill, but rather as a calling. The Universityโs motto โLuceat lux Vestra, nunc et semperโ which translates to โLet your light shine, now and alwaysโ, serves as a guiding beacon for this โcallingโ, inspiring Urians to radiate excellence, integrity, and compassion in every endeavor they pursue.
