The Department of Geology at Caraga State University successfully concluded the Final Thesis Defense for our fourth-year BS Geology students last November 27, from 1 PM to 5 PM, at the New Admin Conference Hall, CSU Main Campus. Christian Salvador opened the session with his study, “Drainage Network Characterization Through Lineament Analysis of Manoligao Watershed, Dinagat Islands Using Multifactorial Approach.” His presentation underscored the integration of lineament extraction and watershed analysis to better understand the structural and hydrological framework of the area.
Following this, Matt Andrew Graban and Jasey Jay C. Yu presented their thesis, “Redox Geochemistry and Peat Soil Characteristics Across Forest Types of Caimpugan Peatland, Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary: Implications for Carbon Sequestration.” Their research provided valuable insights into peat soil chemistry, forest-type variations, and the broader implications for carbon storage within the Agusan Marsh ecosystem.
The third presenters, Ed Dwight C. Barrios, Friendylle P. Bondad, and Yleiah Ann D. Cortejos, discussed their work, “Karstification Potential Mapping in Siargao Island, Philippines, Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).” Their study highlighted the use of GIS-based analysis to map karst features and assess areas susceptible to karstification—an essential component for informed land-use planning in Siargao.
Concluding the defense was Danisse M. Casanova with her research, “Magmatic Evolution of the Volcanic Rocks in Mt. Hibok-Hibok, Camiguin Island, Southern Philippines Using Textures and Geochemistry.” Her study examined the petrological and geochemical characteristics of volcanic rocks to reconstruct the magmatic processes that shaped Mt. Hibok-Hibok.
The Department congratulates all presenters for successfully presenting their work and demonstrating competence in geoscientific research. Their contributions reflect both the academic rigor and the continued growth of geological studies at CSU.
