A proton is one of the particles found inside the center of an atom, and it helps make up almost all ordinary matter around us. Although it is often drawn as a simple round particle, a proton actually has an internal structure made of smaller parts called quarks and gluons, whose behavior determines the protonโ€™s size and properties.

One long-standing issue in physics is the proton radius puzzle, where different experiments have measured slightly different sizes for the proton, leading scientists to ask how large the proton really is.

In the recent published work of the nuclear and particle physics group, they studied the structure of the proton by extracting the proton electric form factor from low-transfer-momentum elastic electronโ€“proton scattering data using a phenomenological quark-based model. The study focuses on the low transfer momentum-squared region, where the slope of the electric form factor is strongly connected to the proton charge radius. The extracted form factor agrees well with PRad and Mainz data below transfer momentum-squared of below 0.1 GeV, while deviations at higher transfer momentum-squared show the modelโ€™s limited applicability outside the low-momentum-transfer domain. Using polynomial-based parametrizations, the work obtains an average proton radius of about 0.83fm, consistent with PRad and spectroscopy-based results. Overall, the study provides additional support for a smaller proton charge radius and demonstrates the usefulness of low transfer momentum-squared form-factor extraction in understanding proton structure.
