𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐀 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐚

While others awaited their journey to other nations, two students took their courage, carried not only their bags but also their passion for teaching and learning across borders. An opportunity to explore other landscapes and take part in teaching and cross-cultural exchange. Along with their journey, they carry a representation that connects them beyond barriers when they stay in a new culture and environment.

Two students from the Philippine Normal University Visayas, along with other students from different campuses, underwent a 30-day International Practicum at Universitas Kristen Indonesia (UKI). The two students, Jhoanne Lingan and Mherfel Jane Singson, from the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (BECED) program, participated in classroom observation, co-teaching, and lesson planning. They observed how teachers there adhere to the student-centered approach system, how they are organized, and how passionate teachers are in every activity they do. Their journey goes beyond barriers. Despite the language differences and nervousness, they feel the connection, learning, and excitement.

“The way the kids looked at me with excitement, the way they’d try to speak English just to connect, and the way I learned to express myself through actions, all of it reminded me that teaching is a language of the heart,” Mherfel explained. Meanwhile, Jhoanne shared, "‎This experience has broadened my perspective on education and reinforced my passion for teaching,” emphasizing that education is not limited to borders. "Learning from them brings development in teaching, as well as promoting partnership that adheres to a single goal that is—quality education," she added.

Beyond professional gain, they immerse themselves in the atmosphere of learning, and they feel the passion, patience, and genuine care from the community. Perhaps this journey brings a desire of longing for home, but for them, they feel home in a place that is far away from home, a warm welcome and kindness they felt—stays forever.

In line with its commitment to strengthening international academic partnerships and expanding global learning opportunities, the Philippine Normal University (PNU) has deployed twelve Bachelor in Early Childhood Education (BECED) pre-service teachers to Universitas Kristen Indonesia (UKI) for a 30-day international practicum program from September 9 to October 5, 2025, in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Before their departure, the students paid a courtesy visit to PNU President Dr. Bert J. Tuga, who extended his encouragement and expressed confidence in their ability to represent the University and the Philippines with excellence. The program forms part of PNU’s thrust toward experiential learning, enabling future educators to acquire meaningful teaching experience in diverse cultural and educational contexts.

The participating students include Jairah Patual, Alexandra Simone Ramos, Ellonah Jen Remoreras, Ianna Deirdre Resurreccion, Gemimah Faith Barbado, Maria Faraseth Celso, Lycka Federigan, and Alliyah Guillen Moreto from PNU Manila; Mherfel Jane Singson and Jhoanne Lingan from PNU Visayas; and Dane Adrales and Resadel Baylosis from PNU Mindanao. Selected for their academic excellence and dedication to teaching, they will take part in classroom observation, co-teaching, lesson planning, and cross-cultural activities.

Throughout the program, the PNU pre-service teachers will collaborate closely with UKI faculty and students, fostering the exchange of innovative pedagogical approaches and best practices in early childhood education. This collaboration benefits both institutions by cultivating global citizenship, broadening cultural perspectives, and enriching classroom experiences on both sides.

PNU’s engagement with UKI highlights the University’s commitment as the National Center for Teacher Education to prepare globally competent educators who can thrive in an interconnected world. The initiative also reflects a shared vision between PNU and UKI to advance cultural exchange and international collaboration in education. Its success is expected to open more avenues for joint academic endeavors in the future, further strengthening ties between the two institutions.

​Meet Our Bachelor in Early Childhood Education (BECED) Faculty Members

​Dr. Maria Fatima P. Dolendo leads the program as its Program Coordinator. She is in charge of the program's vision and direction, making sure it prepares students to be effective educators.

​​Asst. Prof. Gem Angeli L. Lumawag is the Internship Supervising Instructor, providing crucial, hands-on guidance as students apply their knowledge in real-world settings.

​Instr. Kareem Glade A. Gamboa serves as the Adviser of the Advocates of Early Childhood Education, a program-based student organization that fosters a strong community and leadership among future educators.

​Dr. Ma. May Flor V. Sentina, a licensed guidance counselor, is the research course instructor, equipping students with the skills to critically analyze and contribute to the field of early childhood education.

​Dr. Madelene G. Jose is an allied faculty member who shares her unique expertise to support and enrich the BECED program.
