For years, discussions on Philippine education reform have focused on curriculum, learning materials, assessment results, and school resources. Less frequently discussed is the institution responsible for preparing the teachers who stand at the center of the education system.

A proposal now gaining support in the Senate and the House of Representatives seeks to address this gap by expanding the mandate of the Philippine Normal University (PNU), the country's National Center for Teacher Education.

The Board of Regents of PNU, by virtue of Resolution No. U-4055, s. 2026, has endorsed the proposed Revised Philippine Normal University Charter, a measure that seeks to designate the University as the National University for Teacher Education (NUTE).

If enacted, the proposal would expand PNU's role in teacher preparation, educational research, policy development, professional learning, and technical assistance to institutions and agencies involved in teacher education.

Philippine Normal University Visayas garnered multiple recognitions in the 2nd Commission on Higher Education โ€“ Negros Island Region (CHED-NIR) Regional Quality Awards on May 26 at STI West Negros University.

PNUV garnered the award for Excellence in Research for its outstanding commitment to produce research publications; Outstanding Board Performance Award for Ranking 2nd in the March 2026 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LEPT) โ€“ Secondary Level; and International Ranking Recognition Awards for its exceptional achievements and contributions in several areas such as instruction research, community extension, and other vital sectors.

Several notable figures attended to claim these recognitions including the Executive Director and Provost, Dr. Ralger D. Jocson Jr., alongside him were Dir. June Faith G. Gumban, Director for Administration, Finance, and Planning; Dr. Richelle A. Delmo, Head, Student Affairs and Services Unit; Dr. Maria Fatima Perales-Dolendo, Head of the Extension, Alumni, Linkages, and Internationalization Unit, and Asst. Prof. Paul S. Magbanua, Head of Quality Assurance Management Unit.

Through these acknowledgements from CHED, the institution continued to reaffirm its steadfast commitment to excellence that brought pride to the entire PNUV community.

The CHED Regional Office XVIII โ€“ NIR organized this event in celebration of the CHED 32nd Founding Anniversary, gathering various schools and universities across the region.
