CAT Leads "SAFE Brgy. Jimautan" Outreach for Fire Victims

CALBAYOG CITY — In a direct response to the recent fire that devastated local households, the College of Agriculture and Technology (CAT) faculty and students launched a comprehensive outreach program titled "SAFE Brgy. Jimautan" (Support and Awareness for Fire Emergencies). The initiative aimed to provide both immediate relief and long-term safety education to the families displaced by the blaze.

The outreach team was warmly received by the Barangay Jimautan Council, led by Punong Barangay Susana "Denden" P. Villas. The local officials expressed deep gratitude for the academic community’s effort to support their constituents during this crisis. The program specifically served 29 families—totaling 99 individuals from 27 destroyed houses—who are currently grappling with the loss of their homes and belongings.

A core component of the "SAFE" initiative was the Fire Prevention and Safety Orientation. To provide expert guidance, CAT invited personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), headed by SINSP Tereso T. Tuazon, Acting City Fire Marshal. The orientation focused on the theme: "Aton paghisgutan ngan mapahibaroan an mga hinungdan, risgo, ngan peligro han sunog" (Let us discuss and be informed about the causes, risks, and dangers of fire), emphasizing that awareness is the first line of defense against future tragedies.

Following the educational sessions, CAT faculty and students conducted a distribution of relief goods to the affected families. The atmosphere was one of solidarity as community leaders shared words of encouragement and commitment to the victims' recovery. SFO4 Wenifreda A. Catalan, Deputy City Fire Marshal, delivered a message of support on behalf of the BFP, reminding the community that the Bureau remains a steadfast partner in their safety and long-term rehabilitation.

Representing CAT Dean Dr. Jessie R. Sabijon, the OIC, Dr. Archie B. Lauderes, reaffirmed the college's dedication to extension services. She emphasized that the university stands firmly with the people of Jimautan, ensuring that academic resources translate into meaningful community support in times of need. In response, Punong Barangay Susana Villas delivered a heartfelt message of gratitude, thanking both the CAT team and the BFP for their presence and the tangible aid provided to her constituents.

The event concluded with a symbolic photo opportunity, marking a significant step toward the community's healing and resilience.

NwSSU Agriculture Students Begin Internship at DOST-PNRI

QUEZON CITY – Two Bachelor of Science in Agriculture students from Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) Main Campus officially commenced their two-month On-the-Job Training (OJT) at the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) on February 5, 2026.

The interns, Jerome P. Endiza and Roma A. Jabelo, both majoring in Horticulture, were accepted into the prestigious program located at the PNRI Compound in Diliman, Quezon City. They were officially deployed under the guidance of Mr. Mark Vincent G. Latras to gain specialized experience in nuclear applications within the agricultural sector.

The DOST-PNRI, formerly the Philippine Atomic Energy Commission, has been the country’s lead agency for nuclear science and technology since 1958. The institute is mandated to conduct comprehensive research and development on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy while providing specialized nuclear services to both the public and private sectors. Furthermore, it maintains strict regulatory control to ensure the safety of radioactive materials and facilities, protecting workers and the environment alike.

The internship marks a significant collaboration between NwSSU’s College of Agriculture and Technology (CAT) and the national research institute. The university expressed its gratitude to PNRI leadership, including Director Dr. Carlo A. Arcilla, Agricultural Research Section Head Dr. Glenda G. Obra, and Senior Science Research Specialist Dr. Roland V. Rallos, for welcoming the students into their laboratories.

Dr. Jessie R. Sabijon, Dean of the NwSSU College of Agriculture and Technology, played a pivotal role in facilitating the partnership, ensuring that students have access to high-level technical training that complements their academic studies.

Over the next eight weeks, Mr. Endiza and Ms. Jabelo are expected to engage in hands-on research that bridges the gap between traditional horticulture and modern nuclear science, representing NwSSU on a national stage.
